In order to do this, they must assess their personal preferences and eliminate lifestyles and locations they have no interest in. If a student is considering pursuing nursing, they must acknowledge the work environment they will be placing themselves in. The average nurse works about 40+ hours a week in a hospital or clinic setting. The shifts are not short, nor are they easy. Doctors tend to rely on nurses and give them many responsibilities throughout their shift. As a result, nursing is a high stress level job which requires a person who does well under pressure. Nurses must always be on their toes, and they must be able to quickly recall information. One significant factor when choosing between nursing and secondary education is the location of the available jobs within the two career pathways. Both nursing and secondary education allow a student to live anywhere where a school or hospital is present, and as a result they are left with a diverse amount of choices. A person’s values reflect their personality, and play an important role in decision making and critical thinking. Nurses must be able to provide emotional support, and in order to do this successfully they themselves must be emotionally stable. For instance, if a patients’ family is grieving a nurse must know how to react and how to comfort them. Most nurses will do everything in their power to do what is best for their patients and their families, and they are often very selfless when doing so. If a student decides to pursue a career in nursing, they must be compassionate and considerate towards others. In other words, nurses must have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to patients’ families, patients, and their doctors by using their critical thinking skills, and should remember that the people they deal with on a daily basis are just as human as they are. Likewise, it is essential for a high school teacher to have the same degree of compassion as a nurse. Teachers must genuinely care about every single one of their students: even the troublemakers. Teachers also must innately contain the ability to teach out of the passion of their own heart since there are little to no incentives for K-12 teachers nowadays.
