The Importance Of Stem Cell Research

Every living thing on this planet is made of cells of all different types, but before these cells become what they need to be, they start off as stem cells. A stem cell is an unspecialized cell as well as a cell that can be induced into becoming something else. (Health, Stem Cell Basics, 2016) There are two different types of stem cells, although Embryonic stem cells are the ones most commonly heard about, adult stem cells are also cells that can be worked with. Original research in stem cells began in mice in the early 1980’s, which branched out to research in to aid in vitro fertilization research. (Health, 2016) Today science has found a connection between stem cells and curing diseases, but some believe that the science behind working with stem cells is destroying embryos, as most of the research is being done on embryonic stem cells. (Genetic Science, 2014) Much of the controversy surrounding stem cell research comes from the fact that to correctly study the cell, you must remove the inner mass of the embryo cell, therefore destroying it, and by some peoples’ standards, killing a child. By allowing stem cell research to continue, whether federally monitored or not, such as with laws put in place by President Bush and President Obama, we are allowing major science breakthroughs. Current scientific discoveries include creating a bladder from cloned cells and regrowing a mandible.
