Personal Narrative: My Debate In Education

Debate I have been involved in debate since 6th grade, before out middle school provided a debate class. Three of my friends and I were coached by elder sibling of a couple friends in the event of congress, which we were able to compete in via our UDL, which hosted middle school tournaments and gave us the resources to participate in the program. Midway through 7th grade, I began competing in the event of policy debate with a close friend, through which, for middle scholars, we reached a considerable measure of success. In freshman year of high school I began debating for my current school – I partnered with a different friend that began the activity with me in middle school, and in that year we began to develop our own style of debate and used the activity as a mode of expression and an outlet for our ideas. Through all the years I have been involved in debate, I have gained a lot in terms of educational …show more content…
I think this experience has also helped my growth as a student and debater, as it has given me a good measure of my own abilities and skills and taught me about mentorship in relationship to my own education, which I am sure will impact how I expand my circles in the future and who I value in my life.
Debate has cultivated my love for learning and has given me skills that I find are of extremely high importance- not only has it provided me with portable skills and a huge amount of background knowledge on many subjects, but has also given me a community of people who support and encourage me in my endeavors. Debate, to me, is hugely important because of the personal relationships you can build, the portable skills and amount of topical knowledge you gain from it, as well as the numerous opportunities available to debaters because of participation in the

Heinrichs suggests that if our culture values rhetoric more, and we thank people for arguing, especially kids, proper arguments and debates can break the stalemate on the issues surrounding our society (327-328). Jay Heinrichs nails it. The usefulness and the capacity of the information is stellar. I am never one to believe that something is perfect, however. There are times I believe that his information was slightly redundant.…

In Deborah's Tannen’s essay Agonism in the Academy: Surviving the Argument Culture, Tannen asserts her belief that in order to create educational in depth debates, scholars must be able to converse with others, and build off of their peers ideas rather than denounce them. Tannen first declares this concept when she revisits a moment in her life when she attended an unsatisfying reading group. In this reading group, the scholars among her turned to the faults of the focus book’s genre, rather than the book itself. Due to this setting, Tannen was reminded of a term coined by Walter Ong: agonism. Tannen describes Ong’s term as “a debate in which the contestants are assigned opposing positions, and one party wins.…

In debate, regardless of the topic, teams must be prepared to defend both sides of a contentious issue. It wasn’t until my senior year of debate when I recognized that debate offered more than just wins and losses on each side of a topic; it was a form of discovery to learn more about the opposing truths underlying complex issues and the contradictions of the world we live in. I started debating as a freshman and had a natural affinity for it; pointing out flaws in others’ logic to deconstruct arguments was second nature to me, and debate further refined these abilities. I measured the growth in my abilities through the wins, losses, and arbitrary rankings I accumulated. Motivated by trophies, I approached debate rounds with the mentality that the arguments were a means to victory, and not an end unto itself.…

Since starting high school, my interest in classroom learning had dropped quite significantly. I felt like grades were just a game, and that I should be out in the world learning things I deemed "practical life skills." Arguing and debating is an important part of the human existence. Yet few people find themselves able to properly argue and win. One man, Jay Heinrichs, uses his knowledge in rhetoric, the art of arguing and persuasion, to write Thank You for Arguing. Sports debate is a hobby that I am most passionate for. A reason I am so fond of this hobby is because it includes two of my favorite things: sports and arguing. I constantly find myself tuning into ESPN to watch ESPN first take or Fox Sports to watch Undisputed. These two sports debate shows take up most of most mornings as I would sit watching the art of oration between two well prepared candidates. Unlike sports debate, writing papers was not one of my hobbies.…
