The Philly Center includes a daycare, a special needs center, and an office that carries hundreds of children and adults. One man, however, drives up with his car and parks it right under the building in the parking garage. He leaves his car parked and walks down Main Street for a couple of miles. What the jubilant people of the Philly Center did not know was that the building would collapse due to a car bomb and everyone will die. “Deterrence is not aimed to punish a past offense, but rather to prevent future ones,” therefore, capital punishment safeguards a society (Bidinotto). The deterrence theory can be interpreted as instilling a thought into the criminal in where he/she realizes that if a deliberate killing of a person if committed, that criminal will face capital punishment charges, and therefore, is meant to prevent murders. Capital punishment has also been scientifically proven statistically in where “each execution reduces homicides by five to six, which proves to be a strong deterrent effect, and on average, results in 18 fewer murders for every execution” (Jacoby). Because death is the ultimate price for murder, criminals realize that murder will lead to death, and the thought of this deters criminals from committing heinous crimes because they do not want their own life taken. With the death penalty enacted, people are less committed to violent crimes such as murder, and if the criminal does commit a murder, justice will be done for the

“I see no alternative but to conclude that capital punishment cannot be justified on the basis of its deterrent effect” (Marshall,1972). Proving that is really is not a deterrence. Although one example of where capital punishment could be seen as an effective possible deterrent would be in The District of Columbia which has no death penalty has a very high rate of homicides. There are other deterrents to crime other than Capital Punishment, there is incarceration, fines, moral prohibitions and many others. One study, found that the elevated levels of assurance of arrest on crime lowered the burglary rate in Canada (Zedlewski, 1983).…

Article Summary #1: Author William Tucker uses his 2000 American Spectator article to explain why the death penalty is actually a deterrent to criminals. Tucker analyzes the statistics of crime over the years and concludes that when death penalty rates are up, murder rates are down, and when execution rates decrease, the rate of homicides rises (par. 13). While many criminologists believe that the death penalty doesn’t affect the amount of murders that take place in America, Tucker counters by saying, “The results are plain to see. Beginning at almost the exact point when executions ended, murder soared to unprecedented heights.…

In the article Does the Death Penalty Deter, the authors, Donohue and Wolfers, examine whether or not capital punishment is a deterrent of murderers in the United States. The article dismisses the claim that the death penalty is successful in lowering crime rates. The authors of the article designed a study based off of a previous one done in the 1970’s; however, they changed some of the variables. The study they based their work off of was done by an economist named Isaac Ehrlich. Ehrlich’s study concluded that the death penalty was a successful deterrent of crime from 1935-1969.…

Haag, a sociologist, wrote an extensive explanation on why the death penalty would help deter criminals from committing crimes. He has stated that the death penalty may be the only way to keep some people from committing crimes. He has said that this will help reduce the number of victims to crimes such as murder and rape. Haag also feels that if the punishments for a crime is raised then the desire to commit a crime is quickly diminished. I agree with Haag.…

Many argue that the Death penalty functions as a specific and general deterrence in society. For instance, general deterrence aims to make the individual aware of similar consequences occurring if he or she were to commit a similar offense (Fuller 2014, 20). Whereas, specific deterrence focuses on preventing the perpetrator itself from recidivating, due to understanding the consequences of having that behavior (Fuller 2014, 20). It is argued that one fears death and would rather face a life sentence in prison than Capital punishment. This allegedly is the reason why those who deviate lessen the severity of their offense to avoid the Death penalty.…

If murderers know the death penalty to crime and still keep doing that, that means the death penalty is not an effective way to deterrent them; if murderers do not know that they will be sentenced to death after committing crimes, it means that the death penalty does not achieve as the desired effect. Amnesty international (2000) has declared that there is no clear evidence to show the death penalty can reduce the criminal rate. As a result, the intimidation effect of death penalty is useless to avoid the increasing criminal rate. Additionally, some people also note that the retaliation is not a negligible moral issue on the capital punishment. It cannot be denied that revenge is the intrinsic characteristic of human, and capital punishment is a way to comfort the families of the victims.…

One of the very first deterrence studies looked at the states that used capital punishment and states that did not have the death penalty (Akers et al, 2017).
