Capital Punishment And Deterrence

Rough Draft On a cool, sunny morning in the City of Brotherly Love during the most wonderful time of the year, people are joyful, bells are ringing, and everyone is smiling in the Philly Center, Philadelphia’s multipurpose skyscraper in the heart of Downtown. The Philly Center includes a daycare, a special needs center, and an office that carries hundreds of children and adults. One man, however, drives up with his car and parks it right under the building in the parking garage. He leaves his car parked and walks down Main Street for a couple of miles. What the jubilant people of the Philly Center did not know was that the building would collapse due to a car bomb and everyone will die. “Deterrence is not aimed to punish a past offense, but rather to prevent future ones,” therefore, capital punishment safeguards a society (Bidinotto). The deterrence theory can be interpreted as instilling a thought into the criminal in where he/she realizes that if a deliberate killing of a person if committed, that criminal will face capital punishment charges, and therefore, is meant to prevent murders. Capital punishment has also been scientifically proven statistically in where “each execution reduces homicides by five to six, which proves to be a strong deterrent effect, and on average, results in 18 fewer murders for every execution” (Jacoby). Because death is the ultimate price for murder, criminals realize that murder will lead to death, and the thought of this deters criminals from committing heinous crimes because they do not want their own life taken. With the death penalty enacted, people are less committed to violent crimes such as murder, and if the criminal does commit a murder, justice will be done for the
