When the death penalty is subjected to a cost benefit analysis, the ledger is one sided- huge costs both social and monetary and no discernable benefits, other than perhaps mollifying a hunger for retribution (“Reflections…”). A Seattle University did a study on the death penalty of examining the costs of how much money would have to be paid in order to execute it. The penalty case was found on average to cost one million dollars more than a similar case where the death penalty was not sought. Defense costs were about three times as high in death penalty cases and prosecution costs were as much as four times higher (“Death…”). There is no doubt that here has been innocent people have been executed throughout the decades. When this happens, it is not really a financial cost as much as a heartbreaking loss for the families that had to live their lives knowing that a family member had to die and innocent death. Some of the punishments that have to do with people making the wrong choice can either be brutal or forgiving. The ones that are let off the hook for what they do wrong are really lucky because they did not have to serve their crime requirements. However, that also means that what they did was clearly not that serious and it most likely did not harm anyone or anything. It almost seems as if people that are let off easy, they do not ever realize what they have done was wrong or very serious. The only way for any criminal to learn his or her lesson is to spend the time in jail and think about it throughout that period of time. Any time an individual harms someone intentionally, they should think about what they have done. Most of the time that is not the case because they have not been punished for their actions like they should have been. Another reason that people need to be locked away or killed for their crimes is because of the community. The community does not deserve to have to worry about having to walk some place in public without the possibility of being harmed by somebody out of their right mind (“The Pros…”). These are just some of the saftey reasons that people should not have to worry about when they want to
