My Father's Minotaur: A Short Story

There he was, amidst those whose fate was so tragic my heart ached. He was entering the castle I knew and loved. My father allowed those who were going into the maze one final feast. The house was decorated with flowers and ribbons hanging from the ceilings accompanied by delicacies the chefs prepared only this time of year. I hated this time of year, the time when innocent civilians were sacrificed for my father 's Minotaur. It always seemed like the angel of death was lurking through the halls. I had heard rumors about him, the great Theseus, …show more content…
How could I have been so naïve? Tears streamed down my face, all I could think about was Theseus. Maybe he didn’t actually leave me? One doesn’t actually leave someone they love, right? In the midst of making excuses for him, I felt a tap on my shoulder; it was a handsome man with red wavy hair and a muscular physique. I thought to myself, “When did I become noticeable to all these men?” His eyes were blue and soft, he then offered his hand and strangely I felt comforted. He let go and in a deep voice exclaimed, “Hello beautiful maiden, I am Hercules.” I spent most of my time with Hercules and I began to develop feelings for him. I knew that Theseus and Hercules were cousins and rivaled each other since boyhood; maybe that’s why I was fixated. One day we were taking a walk along the beach; the sun was warm and the water glimmered like diamonds. In that moment Hercules got down on one knee and proposed. I accepted and we agreed to move back to Athens to get married.
Hercules and I made it back to Athens. I know I promised to marry him but he still wasn’t Theseus. I should have moved on. Hercules wouldn’t hurt me and would have cared for me better than the man who abandoned me on an island. Was I only willing to marry him in order to get back at

Powerful and harsh are the gods of ancient Greece. They are to be respected, worshipped and feared in order to live a peaceful and long life. Hesiod represents these gods in similar but contrasting ways through the tale of Prometheus and Pandora in his poems, Works and Days and The Theogony. Though both poems are different and take on a different form they are both considered wisdom literature because we learn a lesson of right and wrong from the tales being told. In these poems we examine the gods through the eyes of the man working for a living and through the eyes of the gods fighting for their place among themselves in Olympus.…

Why do people’s attitude and tone change? Author’s make conflict and drama in books to change characters actions towards others. The attitude of a character can change as they go through a journey and travel from page to page. For example, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hermia is trapped in Athenian Law because of love and Theseus’ decision makes him change from a stern churlish man into a loving and accepting human being. Shakespeare uses conflict to change Theseus to adjust his attitude and tone towards Hermia and the Lovers.…

As a result the sons of non-Athenian women could not become full citizens. Pericles would therefore be risking his whole political career if he married me in defiance of the very law he had introduced and he would be a total hypocrite…

The most important holiday in Mexico is the Day of the Dead, El Día de Los Muertos. Surprisingly, this holiday is anything but depressing. In the weeks before, Mexicans excitedly prepare to welcome the souls of the dead, who come back each year to visit the living. From October 31 through November 2 this year, I attended this fiesta with my roommate Manuel. By sharing Day of the Dead activities in his family’s home, in the marketplace, and in a cemetery, I have observed that Mexicans, unlike other North Americans, accept and celebrate death as a part of life.…

William Shakespeare’s comedy play A Midsummer Night’s Dream has a variety of characters, a determined nobleman, a love-struck woman, a meddlesome fairy, but most importantly, a man of rationality, Theseus. He is the Duke of Athens and if any citizen has any sort of dilemma, they would feel obliged to go to Theseus. In the 5th and final act of Shakespeare’s play, Theseus goes on a poetic rant on how the main characters of the play are exaggerating on their enchanted night, and how he sees poetry and love to be foolish. Theseus’ speech is appropriate to him in the way that his character is the pure embodiment of rationality. (Shakespeare 5.1.2-22)…
