Vanessa Perrault: A Teacher Analysis

Improved Essays
Stephen King once said, “We never know which lives we influence, or even when, or why.” This quote rings true for Vanessa Perrault, who maintains that the influence that she has been able to have on numerous students over the last six years is the primary reason that she still teaches. I met Vanessa for the first time in my sophomore year. At that time, she was working at Franklin Towne Charter High School in Philadelphia and was the director of the musicals at Saint Hubert Catholic High School for Girls, her alma mater, and the place where I would audition for their school musical. One of the reasons that I had decided to audition at Saint Hubert was because I had heard glowing reports from those who had previously acted under her. …show more content…
As I made my way to her door, I was immediately struck by the warmth and coziness of her home. After passing the wooden swing on the porch, I was welcomed by the painted walls inside her house, which she recently painted herself to give each room its own identity. Her creativity is not only exhibited inside of her house, but it is also one of the major focuses of her classroom. Once we had caught up on recent events, I had decided to ask my former director about her life as a teacher. Recalling her time when she was my age, Vanessa revealed that she had not always desired to be a teacher, but rather an editor for a magazine and that she had only decided to become a teacher after her experience working with children at a recreational center. This experience was the major cause that she had transitioned from a strict English major to a Secondary Education major with a concentration in English. Vanessa then described why she had a love for the language arts, claiming that she not only enjoyed reading as a pastime but that it allowed her to draw on her experience in theatre to create interesting lessons for her students. “It gives me an outlet for a more creative way to teach. In the classroom, it’s like being an actor,” she …show more content…
When I had met her three years ago, I simply believed that I was meeting a new director; however, I had actually met the woman who would inspire me to follow in her footsteps to teach. To once again quote Stephen King, “We never know which lives we influence, or even when, or why,” but Vanessa Perrault continues to influence lives every single day, including

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…

The air sirens wail like spoiled children as the snowfall beats down from English skies. In the States, Oppenheimer and his constituents are drafting the first of many blueprints of a bomb that will eventually force the Japanese out of World War II. Several thousand miles away, church bells ring for my great-grandfather and his new wife in Italy. Just like Michael Corleone in The Godfather, he is wearing his military uniform. I pass by their wedding pictures whenever I visit him, lining the cracked wallpaper of his room in a local nursing home.…

In “Forum Teaching Poetry with a Personal Experience”, Shelia bases her teaching of primary and middle school off of her own childhood memories of a collection of poems, A Child’s Garden of Verses, by Robert Lois Stevenson. She remembered loving poetry at a young age, especially from the book as the poems were often about kids. As Shelia became a teacher, however, she realized that other children would not have the same experience. Other teachers often did not expose children to much poetry. So, she took it upon herself to show these kids the light.…

Thinking and unfolding crumpled papers from my first three years here, I remember how horrific and terrifying the first day was. I specifically remember taking deep breaths in and out as the bus unloaded all the students. Before I had gotten on the bus, my mother stood on the porch outside, and I blew at least three kisses to her as I walked down the driveway, and she blew one last kiss to me before I turned around to hop up the steep stairs. By the middle of the day, I began to cry and tried to sneak out to the bathroom. I was crying because I had missed my mom, and the four hours I had been there were far too long.…

In Teaching for Joy and Justice renowned author Linda Christensen explore how to make student’s learning for reading and writing meaningful. She argues that in order for students to see purpose and meaning in their writing they must be assigned writing assignments that have real world application. In order for this to happen, the teacher must assign writing projects that allow students to share their writing with the world—having an authentic audience. For my project this week I decided to take this idea of having an authentic audience and placing that in the center of my student’s writing. I want my future students to not write for just the teacher, but to write for the world.…

Hill (2012) states that ‘to be multiliterate means to be literate in print-based and new communication technologies’ (p. 361). Such technologies include ‘electronic literacies, technoliteracies, digital literacies, visual literacies and print-based literacies’ (Hill 2012, p. 361).…
