Death in the Brothers: a Tale of Two Sons (2013) is represented as a learning tool for self-discovery and a lesson in mortality. Death is present from the beginning when Naiee (the youngest brother) is mourning his mother’s death. Through a flashback it is understood that Naiee failed to save his drowning mother in a storm. There is a feeling of connection for the player that has experienced similar loss. It provides a sense of empathy for those who have not had such an experience. The scenery and the boys actions make it feel childlike as well as highlights how naïve the brothers are. Significantly, death is at the heart of the lessons of the story as the brothers are afraid for their father. They cannot allow their father to die like their mother and fail both parents. Thus, the players are willing to put themselves in danger whatever the cost, even their own lives. The story does show through the brother’s lives the fact that death is final in their world therefore serves as a reminder that mortals are fragile as is life. Death is symbolized with the appearance of dead bodies that are dismembered and this passage of increased danger forces the player to see death and tackle it. Naiee does not think he is as strong as his brother and depends on him to survive. This brings Naiee to feel vulnerability and mental or physical weakness as he is haunted by guilt for his mother’s death. When his brother dies, Naiee is not physically able to confront his fears and collapses. The player can see the struggle and fear the character’s face with death, however, do not feel it on the same level as Mass Effect 3 (2012) as the player is less invested and in control. Spirituality is present in the ghosts of his mother and brother. The message to Naiee from his mother is that she does not blame him and his brother’s spirit is there to give him the confidence he needs to be brave. The player then handles both brother’s controls and this allows the player to provide support for Naiee as he learns to overcome his fears. When he reunites with his father at the gravesides, Naiee understands that death is always connected to life. Brothers: a Tale of Two Sons (2013) illustrates the heartbreak of death through the brother’s experiences of having to understand
