Basketball Player: A Short Story

Great Essays
Before I was even born it seemed it was in my destiny to be a basketball player. My mom won a high school state championship and was some kind of legend in town. When she first signed me up to play in our town rec league, all of the men who ran the league couldn’t believe she didn’t sign up to coach. One of the guys at the table then turned to me and told me he was there when my mom scored the winning basket at the Boston Garden to take the team to the state championship game. When we got home later that night I asked my mom about that game. She took our her picture in the newspaper of her scoring the winning basket as well as all her other basketball memorabilia and I was hooked. I knew then and there all I wanted to do in life was win …show more content…
Summer softball took the best girls in the town league and put them on two ‘equal’ teams to play against other teams in the area. In my opinion the teams were never equal and I was always on the better team. Like in basketball this team dominated the competition. We weren’t as successful as we were in basketball, but we still did win our fair share of games and championships. It’s pretty safe to say that before I got to high school I was very accustomed to being a part of the best teams as well as winning the majority of our …show more content…
I still had aspirations of playing at a higher level, but my confidence was completely shaken when I did not make varsity basketball as a freshman. There were four freshman who had been invited to play fall ball with the varsity team from the year before and I was the only one who did not make varsity. I was pulled aside by the coach who told me he just felt I needed a little bit more time to develop. I was furious and I wanted to prove him wrong. After the first scrimmage of the season about a week after I learned I was on JV, the coach called me to the front of the bus on the way home and told me that I would now be practicing with varsity on Sunday’s as well as Saturday’s with the JV team. For about half of the season I would play half of the JV game and play half of the varsity game as well as practice with both teams. Ironically I wasn’t officially just on the varsity squad until the day my grandmother died. It was ironic because my grandmother had died in the morning, but my mom wanted me to go to school since we had a game that day so she didn’t tell me until I got home from school. I was getting on the bus to play our biggest rival when my coach told me I wouldn’t be playing with the JV team that night or the rest of the season. It was the worst day of my life and here I am finally playing in

From kindergarten to the present, I have always wondered about the world around me and always tried to put others needs before myself. My father also thought of me as a caring philosopher because I asked questions like “What is death?”at a young age. My elementary school, Foothill Oak, has shaped some prejudices and arrogance that I did my best to hide and fix through my middle school through high school. In Foothill Oak, I wasn’t challenged much.…

On one afternoon, a boy did not know what was going to happen to him. In North Western Texas, there was a young boy named Kobe. Here, is his story. “Mom, I’m going to the Doom Lands fort,” announced a 12 year old boy named Kobe. It was really only 8:34 a.m., and Kobe and his friend, Courtland wanted to meet up at their “Doom lands” Fort (which really just was a few boards poorly nailed to 2 trees with a tarp roof.)…

I could see myself getting stronger and better. When my coach called me in to his office to talk after a 3 hour Saturday practice, he articulated to me that I would barely play this season. My hard work would acquire me 20 minutes of playing time for the entire year. I was confused as to why I received no playing time. At one point I wanted to quit and never pick up a basketball.…

People coming from a different planet would think every day things we do in life are weird. What we have adapted to and think are normal look very weird to others who haven’t seen people doing things like this. Such as someone who has never shaved before would think that is very odd to shave your beard. Or someone who has never seen a drive threw would think it’s weird to have people have food handed out the window. As we think other cultures are weird we have to look at the fact that our culture is weird to others People that have never seen basketball would thing it is a bunch of people running around with a ball.…

I’m not a very tall person, 5’9” to be exact, so I was always told I wasn’t big enough to play sports. My friends said I wouldn 't play much, and my coaches did the same. I used that as a form of motivation to keep getting better and proving them wrong. I was on the basketball team and I have memories of being told by community members that I wasn’t tall enough and that I should take the winter off. I used that to fuel my fire and started on the basketball team my senior year and led the team in points, assists, and steals.…

They said “You suck at playing, maybe you should quit before high school”. I was prepared to wallow, but I didn’t; I just thought what could I do to improve these circumstances. Throughout this life full of temporaries, one thing that has stayed constant is the game of softball. Between watching my sister play and playing myself- I grew up on a softball field. When I was finally old enough to begin playing, it started as just another fun after-school activity; little did I know it would soon take over my life. I went from rec league to playing competitive travel league softball. As I got older, my main goal was to make the Boyle County Middle School softball.…

The season went by and just like that we were back in the off-season. I had lost my interest in basketball during this time as I had gotten a job and had a gotten the taste of money. As Junior year had started I had not been at practice for basketball for so long. As we got closer and closer to try outs I felt like I was obligated to go out there and try out. Then again, I didn't want to be like those new faces who showed up during that day and had not put in the work weeks ahead.…

Never in a million years would I have dreamed of making varsity as a freshman, especially for a team that had just won back-to-back state championships. Throughout middle school, I had to overcome adversity associated with being a “science nerd.” When people started to discover my academic aptitude, I was labeled a “nerd” who couldn’t be athletic. I wasn’t about to let this stereotype define me, so I strove to invalidate it. Since I joined volleyball two years after most of my peers, I was put on the “B-team” throughout junior high.…

At the next day for practice, the player I trained with told me that I had worked hard enough, but to earn the staring spot over him. Our team had played well for the rest of the season, but lost the semifinals by a free throw. The next day, the coach called me and said that he wanted me to be on his team next year. After we had hung the phone up, I knew that I had accomplished a goal that I had always wanted to accomplish. I called my big cousin to tell him the great news, and he told me that he knew I would make the varsity team one day.…
