“Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth, would care to know my name, would care to feel my hurt.” Many Christians have asked themselves this some question that Casting Crowns asks in the beginning of their song “Who am I.” The song goes on to answer the question of “who I am?” However, as Christians, we can’t rely on one person’s response to the question. We have to answer the question in our own way with the facts of our lives. On October 3, 2016, Dordt College welcomed Dr. Chuck DeGroat to speak at their First Monday Speaker. He came to the college to speak about how we as Christians hide of shames from God, but in truth, we need to come out of our shame and bring it to God. During his speak, Dr. DeGroat discussed three diseases that can affect the heart and fracture a person: Scarcity Syndrome, Creaturely Conundrum, and Fragmentation factor. Each of these “disease” are not true diseases that doctors can diagnose; however, they can plague everyone in Christ or those without Christ. What do these three diseases look like in the human heart and mind? First off, the Scarcity Syndrome is when a person does not feel or think they are not enough for God or the people around them that they love. I often feel the effects of these disease. I question I am doing enough to be safe or if my faith is enough to save me, but then I remember the words from Ephesians 2:8-9. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith- and this is not from yourselves, it is the…
