“Lead by Example” is a term that has no origin, per se, but is visible throughout history further back than Alexander the Great (356 BC – 323 BC). A king at age 19, and conqueror of much of the known world, would draw a sword and lead the charge. The sight of Alexander leading the charge had a motivational inspiring effect on his army that no force on Earth could withstand. As a result of his leadership style, he has no recorded battlefield losses during 11 years of conquest. As a side note, I named my only son after Alexander the Great (Alexander Fritz Daniel Way). The job was to mentor them in preparation for their next level. I took great pride in being “inspection ready” at all times with my appearance, my quarters, and my equipment. I taught them how to survive without a proper supply line. Land navigation, physical fitness, mental acuity, and mission specific skills. I did no less than what I expected of them. Recall 1 Peter 5:3 “Not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.” My greatest fear still is to learn that a former soldier of mine has died because of something I failed to teach them. Reading and examining great leaders like Sun Tzu, Alexander, Julius Caesar, Jesus, Washington, Churchill, and Patton, the “Lead by Example” trait is prevalent in their teaching and actions. To Lead by Example is to exhibit what it is that you define as good, correct, and desirable in the world. To show the manner or bearing that is what you would like displayed in subordinates. Born into poverty, we lived in the Franklin Town Homes (subsidized housing) in Jackson, MI. I witnessed my mother, handicapped from polio at the age of three, put herself through nursing school (Pre-Registered Nurse) while teaching English to junior high school children. Her second husband (married 1970) was a foreign exchange student from Iran attending Engineering school at Michigan State whom required translation to complete his studies. During his attendance at Michigan State, she worked third shift at the Southern Michigan Prison infirmary and later employed as a scrub nurse at Foote Hospital. She accomplished this while raising six children. She may not have known it, but she displayed “Lead by Example” by living it. I am a single father with full custody of my son since he was four months old. I try to live as my mother did (without the handicap) by “Leading by Example.” I speak different languages to him from time to time as a way to plant the seed of desire for (cultural) learning. I returned to school at 45 to complete a Bachelor’s and now a Masters to show him that the learning process will never end and it is never too late to accomplish a goal. Further, statistics show that children of classically educated parent(s) will attain the same level of education (or higher) as their
