His smile was contagious, everyone who knew Carl knew he was a good kid. He loved to entertain people. On April 6, 2009, Carl’s mother Sradiner Walker and his older sister Dominique found carl hanging on electric cord slung over a banister. They called the paramedics, Carl was pronounced dead. A young bright boy was lost and there was nothing that could have been done to bring him back to life. Carl was the middle child in the family, he had two younger siblings, his mother was a two time survivor of breast cancer, and his father wasn’t present in his life. Carl Walker attended New Leadership Charter School in 2009 where he was taunted, teased, and harassed by students. They would spread rumors about him being gay. If the rumor was true, and he was gay, that does not make it right for students to laugh and taunt him. Around the time of Carl’s death, another 11-year-old boy named Jaheem Herrera, was bullied in school and he killed himself his mother found him hanging in the closet, he was cold. Both boys were taunted and called gay by their bullies. Before Carl killed himself he let his mother know that he was getting bullied in school, so Sirdeaner Walker and Carl went to New Leaderships to see what the problem was, and they spoke to school officials about it. He was a good kid with a kind heart, his soul was pure. I remember when carl and I and other young people were preparing for a bible the bible competition. We were eating cookies and we were drinking cookies. Carl was drinking his milk but he was so loud. So I told him you drink like a cow, and everyone started to laugh. His death caused his mother to start a foundation under Carl name, also she helps to create an anti-bully law, she was actively in creating laws, to prevent suicide. She even met present Barack Obama, she was invited ti testify before congress in support of the national anti-bully legislation. And she also participated in a white house conference on bullying. Lose of her child initiated her and people in the community to stand up against a bully. When I found out that carl killed himself because he was bullied, I changed my view on the bully, it ignited me to stand up to bullying and to reflect on my life, because I was bullied growing up in the public school system. His death initiated change in the public school system, bullying became a serious issue in schools. Mayor Dominic Sarno and other officials became involved in fighting the cause against bullying.
