Clearly Nicodemus (A Jewish teacher of the law) approaches Jesus and tells Him that it is obvious He is from God since nobody else could do what He has done if He wasn’t. Now Nicodemus is puzzled when Jesus tells Nicodemus that he must be born again to see the kingdom of God. So this religious teacher of the law is confused about how to go to heaven? Huh? Shouldn’t Nicodemus be an expert on this? Lets skip down to verse 16 and 17. The most famous verses in the bible for many Christians, this is the one that we put on coffee cups and make into bumper stickers. Jesus explains His mission on earth. Jesus came save the world because God loved the world. Some questions we must ask ourselves if we are first time readers of this text. What does it tell us about God if He loves the world? Why does God love the world if there are wars, diseases, racism, and genocides? That doesn’t really seem like a great group of people to say you love. Take a moment to think about that. What do we have to offer God? To an infinitely great God there is nothing we can offer Him so why would He want to love us? And yet He does!

Take a look at verses 2 and 3. Jesus enters into a place called Bethesda, which means “house of mercy”. Now in this weird pool complex there are “multitudes of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed” people sit around this pool searching for physical healing. In this time these people would be considered ceremonially and ritually unclean, now don’t worry about that right now we will touch that later. Basically these people are outcasts, and the religious people of the day would dare not go near them or run the risk of being labeled unclean. But Jesus refuses to be like the religious people of the day, He goes into Bethesda and heals the sick man. Jesus refuses to be like the religious people of the day who refuse to take care of the
