They also went unrecognized for quite some time until Metropolitan Archbishop Athanasius Yeshue Samuel, head monastery of St. Mark’s Syrian Orthodox Monastery showed the Dead Sea Scrolls to Eleazar Lup Sukenik. Sukenik was a professor of Archeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. After Sukenik seen pieces of fragments of the scrolls, he personally took a trip to Bethlehem to see the cave, where the fragments were originally discovered. Sukenik wrote in a diary entry December 1, 1947 stating, “I read a little more in the ‘parchments.’ I’m afraid of going too far in thinking about them. It may be that this is one of the greatest finds ever made in Palestine, a find we never so much hoped for.” (Vermes) Then in February 18, 1948, John C. Trevor was contacted by Father Butrus Sowmly of St. Marks, when Father Sowmly requested help from Trevor because they were unable to recognize some of the ancient Hebrew that was found amongst the scrolls and they were hoping information could be provided so they could start to catalogue the scrolls. So on February 21, Trevor took photographs of the manuscripts so that scholars could perform the necessary studies in determining the origin. Also there were two other written languages found amongst the ancient Paleo-Hebrew in the scrolls. They are: Aramaic, which was spoken and written during the time of Jesus, and the other was Greek. The Dead Sea Scrolls also contained every book from the bible except for the book of Esther. And among these books there are still many unknown scrolls of poetry, stories, commentaries and other works that have not been published. Some of the more known scrolls found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, which you can view online are: The Great Isaiah Scroll, Temple Scroll, War Scroll, Community Rule Scroll, and Commentary on the Habakkuk Scroll. All of these scrolls and manuscripts were written on animal hides, parchments of some kind and other methods, but the one that stands out the most among the scrolls is the Copper Scroll.
