Parents and children almost always get along in fairy tales, but they do so less and less in real life. Neil reacts as if they are in similar situations so that he could relate to them. The situation that is holding him back in doing what he wants is that his parents control his life, making every decision for him without asking. Neil then sees the same thing happening to his roommate Todd. This similarity opens up a door to being friends with Todd. Neil is always there for Todd to let him know that he understands what he is going through. In comparison to Neal, Todd's reactions to his peers are similar. Todd is also in the same situation as the people that surround him, which are their controlling parents. Todd could relate to his friends, but his shyness also holds him back.
In conclusion, Parents make decisions for their children for their own good. Sometimes they just keep making the decisions to the point that they don’t even know how their own child feels. Dead Poet’s Society is a great picture of great expectations coming from parents. But on the other hand parents should try to be understanding with their child and keep account on how they feel about each decision.
