While tragic, it was unfortunately not all that surprising that someone would take Milk’s life; his progressive views were shocking and disturbing to those who didn 't understand the LGBT community for what it was and who disagreed with their lifestyles because of personal and often religious reasons. The shocking part of this story is how it ended for White, the assassin. He was acquitted of all murder charges and was charged with manslaughter despite having shot unarmed Milk five times while he was working in his office.
The news of White’s exceptionally light sentence outraged the people of San Francisco and was the cause of what became know as the White Night Riots. With previous tension between the San Francisco police and the gay community, the riots became violent. Rioters stole tear gas from police cars and set them on fire. Police became outnumbered and were ordered only to stand their ground and try to settle down the protest. After the riot finally broke up, some police officers retaliated by raiding a gay club. The phrase “In God We Trust, Inc.” is a play on the infamous massage that appears on all U.S. currency, “In God We Trust”, that is comparing organized religions to corporations. It is important to note: “religion” can refer to more than just a belief system, it can be anything people follow and put their trust into, from “religiously” following a celebrity or a band, to government. The Dead Kennedys are making a statement that religions are no different than corporations in the way that they try to appeal to people as a ruse to sell their image and make money.
The icons in the image contain coded messages. The crucifix, while a christian symbol, is not meant to symbolize only christianity but religion as a whole.
