THEY-CAN’T-DIE! Such devotion that a seventeen year old has in order to keep the last of his family alive, his sisters. In fact that same devotion which a twelve year old has to keep what is truly left of humankind in his world of script, an infant. So young that unable to eat, but so strong to understand and live in reality. Life in a world designed every inch by inch, word for word,and Life for Life! Imagine - YOU CAN’T, dream-YOU WON'T, Live- YOU’LL DIE! Alex, an inspiration for matters of life and death was portrayed in The Dead And The Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer, similarly Jonas a twelve year old life changer was viewed in The Giver by Lois Lowry. In both books two young boys who although vary in age difference, come to life to save a life, one that has the potential to last. In dystopian novels, a character's true personality comes into existence on the fight for survival.

Towards the end of the book Alex’s sister Briana dies and so he only has Julie left. Alex at this point just wants to make sure that his sisters are safe so doesnt care about himself that he just feels the ““need to find a safe place for Julie,”he said. “Not just for Julie,” Father Mulrooney said. “For yourself also Mr.Morales.” “I don’t matter,” Alex replied. “Just Julie.””(Pfeffer,305).
