A Day That Changed My Life

“You have scoliosis and we need to schedule surgery right away.” I remember hearing the doctor say. A month prior to the doctor appointment that changed my life forever it was a clear and hot day in August whenever I went to the pediatrician for my yearly checkup. We went through the check in process and finally it was my time to go back. “Kassie Butler. Hi, how are you? The nurse asked me. “I’m good, how are you?” “I’m great, step up on the scale so we can get your height and weight. Once all the basic stuff was done, more waiting. We went into my room and patiently waiting for my doctor to come see me. My mom and dad came and checked me out of school and we took a long drive to Oklahoma City not knowing what to expect once we finally got to the doctors office. Once we were there I had to go through all the basic stuff once again and finally had to go back to get x-rays done, which was a completely new and [frightening] thing for me. I was extremely nervous and anxious, I remember the room being cold and getting goosebumps the second I walked in. The x-ray tech told me exactly what to do and just like that we were finished. It was like I was in a trance, I remember being pulled out of my room into the hall but do not remember being rolled down the hallway until arriving in the elevator, I once again became unconscious. My dad then kissed me on the cheek followed by my mom as tears rolled down her face, their baby girl was about to go into surgery.
