March 15, 2001, the day that changed my families life, and forced me to grow up faster than usual. I was no longer the youngest child, no longer the baby of the family, I was now the middle sister, the older sister, a sister that my baby brother, Kevin now had to look up to for support, guidance, and maturity. I am the middle child of 5 children between my mom and dad. My dad has 5 kids including myself, but my mom only has three. Two older sisters, and two younger brothers, places my right in the middle of my family. Ask anyone in Batavia about the worst place to live, you will get one simple answer, State Street. Ask any child living on State Street, the worst part of living there, and they will tell you: labels. I really can’t tell you a single memory of myself from State Street, that involved anyone that lived there having problems. All of the problems were caused by people, who already had an ill perspective of the area, causing problems within the community. I can’t even lie, when we moved from State Street, to a bigger house, I was upset. State street is the place that matured me into who I am today. The things that happened over there, for better and for worse, shaped me into me. If I didn’t move over near all of those people, I wouldn’t have the same goals …show more content…
People say things like, “It won’t matter what happened between you and your ‘friends’ in high school” or “ your perspectives will change so your friend group will change”, but that’s not true for me, The people that I grew up with in the “worst part” or “ghetto” of batavia have taught me things beyond the grasps any teachers can or will. Those “people” have taught me morals, matured me, and shaped me into someone that wants to get out. State Street may create hard hearts, but it also creates matured minds.Everyone acts like Batavia sucks the life out of you if you live here, through the drama and they act like there isn’t any hope for the youth out here.If you live in the “ghetto”, you’ll die in the ghetto. The things that people did over there, including my family, and myself at some point, may not have been the right choices, but they were the choices that basically forced me to grow up, and realize there is more for me to do than to live in Batavia my whole

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

My childhood in New York City was very difficult for me. I grow up in a predominantly Hispanic Dominican decent neighborhood in the upper Manhattan area called Washington Heights. Washington Heights in the early 1990’s was the heart of the drug trade. At one point in the 1990’s it was considered one of the worst neighborhoods to raise a child. I remember in the news, the news anchor reported that New York City was recognized as the crime capital in the 1950's through the early 1990's.…

For the first two years of my life I lived in Lima, Peru and even though I never culturally adapted myself into the culture I would often visit for months and immerse myself into the culture. I can say with confidence that if I grew up in that culture I would not my be the same person I am today because of the fact that they are a collectivistic country and that would change my outlook on myself and the community around me. At around my second birthday my family and I decided to move to the United States in search of a better quality of life. Being under similar circumstances, we have formed a tight bond and help each other out when needed. As unorthodox as my community is, we make the best of the resources we have and strive for opportunities for everyone. It was a place where what I believed was neither a problem nor a threat.…

Ms. Moore starts off with an incisive criticism of segregation, its underlying causes and the apparent unwillingness of Chicago Mayors to focus on it. However, Moore argues that even so, the South Side is a “magical place”. She describes it as a strong community with “vibrant business, bars, funeral homes”. The author briefly describes what is beautiful about having been raised in the South Side and then proceeds to relay her point to the readers: Diversity is worth celebrating, high-poverty segregation is not. She then explores the negative effects of segregation and then proceeds to briefly examine the effects on segregation the housing crisis had.…

In the book “The Other Wes Moore”, the four main concepts that can affect an individual’s life path is environment, personal responsibility, influence, and expectations. Environment and influences are related to each other because different environments have positive and negative influences within them. Personal responsibilities can vary greatly from person to person; some learn responsibility at a young age by doing chores or younger siblings while others never learn to take responsibilities for themselves or their actions. Then, expectations can be what individuals expect from themselves or what others around them expect them to do. However, I believe the four main concepts that shape a person’s direction of life are common sense, new environments,…
