The Day of the Dead is an ancient tradition of Mexico that has been around for centuries. This is a celebration for loved ones who have passed on and provides a window for the living to connect with the dead. In America, we mourn and fear the death of those close to use while followers of this tradition celebrate the life of those who have died each year and welcome their spirits back. The tradition lasts for three days and each day has a special meaning and purpose. This day has been shaped by their own traditions, the traditions of other cultures that influenced Mexico throughout the years, and also by popular culture and globalization. The most influential portion of The Day of the Dead is the food that is prepared with their loved ones in mind. As mentioned before, the people always make sure money is available for the celebration because it is so important. Additionally, the tombs of their loved ones are large and extravagant (almost as nice as their homes) and feature decorations and pictures of who the tomb holds. Also notable is the second day of the celebration where children who have died are said to return. It is believed that if a family hasn’t lost a child, that family will receive a child who has no one to celebrate its death. On this day, people stay at home waiting at their alters that are covered in food (usually fruit) that symbolizes life and abundance for the lost children. Another popular culture influence on this day is the church bells that ring to tell everyone that the children are on their way.
