He always got jittery at red lights. Watching him from the corner of my eye I could see him drumming his fingers on the steering wheel and bouncing his knees, waiting for the right moment to press down onto the gas pedal. “Why dont you just relax?” I said with a laugh, knowing that he would just shake off my remark and continue to fidget. “3...2...1…” he said under his breath, and slammed on the gas; timing the moment that the light would turn green perfectly. Just like he always does. The wind broke into the car as I rolled down the window. It was a warm September day, the leaves had yet to start falling from the trees and the grass was still healthy from the long summer. Fall was just around the corner. We turned left onto a dry, dusty road and that was the first time I saw him. Well, technically it was the first time I saw the back of his sweatshirt covered head, but still you get my point. We continued down the road and passed by him, as the car passed by him I turned back and looked at him. We made eye contact, and my heart jumped. I dont know what it was, but I wanted to know who this boy was. It’s like my heart knew something that my brain didn’t, but I needed to know who he was. The moment had passed and we were hurtling farther away from the boy in the black hoodie, I turned to look at Jack and almost asked him to drive me back, but I couldn’t say the words.
