Internist Personal Statement

I was six years old. We were playing and biking. The sound of an army rescue helicopter above us was getting closer. One of my playmates shouted, “Let’s go to the landing field.” We all biked there to watch as the helicopter transferred injured soldiers from the war zone at the borders of the country to the referral hospital in our neighborhood. We witnessed this scene repeatedly. At first, it was just a childhood curiosity but as I became older, these events lit a spark in my mind toward medicine. I was born during the Iran-Iraq war, which continued until I was seven. Years later, that same hospital became the primary site of my medical training.

Started as a childhood curiosity through the wide-ranging experiences, which exposed me to a wide variety of clinical specialties, I believe internal medicine is the right one to get me to my goals. This specialty unites my abilities, dreams, interests, and goals; it is dynamic, evolving, and exciting. Nothing would be more gratifying than improving cancer patients’ lives through accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment early in a disease course. Not giving up on my goals as well as my past experiences in institutions in different geographical locations have proven myself being resilient, hard worker, and capable of working in diverse teams caring for people from a variety of national, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. I am seeking an internal medicine residency program that will challenge me on a daily basis and constantly provide me with new opportunities to learn and take full advantage of my training. While sadly this was not the last instance of such, my time at the hospital complemented my own experience and fostered my understanding of socio-economical barriers on individuals’ health. I aspire to continue my engagement in community-based care services through medical school – if I am to become an effective physician, I must learn first-hand about the health concerns of local populations. At SCC, I look forward to participate in JOPE and advocate for improved care of patients living in homeless…

I’ve had a variety of exposures to healthcare. I’ve worked in locations ranging from medically isolated villages in rural Africa to urban clinics in the United States, and I’ve been guided by physicians representing disciplines such as family medicine, infectious disease, and pediatrics. Just as diversity is essential to medicine, a diverse range of exposures is equally important for a medical student. The reason I am most interested in the Columbia-Bassett program is because it will provide me with a unique opportunity to learn about health care in two very different environments. This will enrich my capacity to work as a physician.…

One of the soldiers yelled something, but I couldn’t hear him. Out of nowhere, a sea of green fumes enveloped us and my platoon dropped dead like flies. I held my breath and struggled to get my gas mask on, but it was stuck to my belt buckle. I could feel the gas seeping through my fingers and I finally pulled my gas mask on. I could breathe and oxygen felt so precious for the first time.…

Our teacher told us to run home as quick as we can. And I ran fast until I saw them, human beings on horses as I reached the front door of my house. In my little mind I was trying to find an answer to how humans can hurt humans and what is going to happen to us. They wanted horses, money, clothes, food and pretty much everything even whiskey. In a few days on Tuesday, I had never seen so many soldiers at one time in any other places like I did that late morning.…

December 15th, 2013. This was the day I established the Science Leaders of Tomorrow, SLOT, in order to stimulate other students’ interest in science and math. With SLOT, I volunteered at a local elementary school with other students to teach the kids about science and engineering. I once helped a fifth grade student, Manny, who was struggling with circuits in his science class. After working closely with Manny for two weeks, he was able to use circuits to build and program a robot.…

My platoon, the 101st Airborne division, we had been dropped off deep in enemy territory. With the following victory showed who was ready to meet their maker and fight for what is right. As we walk down the road with tattered rolling hills on each side there was a slight confidence feeling in the air that wasn’t there before. When we got to where the forest meets the hills, there was this faint sound of machinery clanking. That’s when we get caught in the middle of…

Describe your commitment to your community through service-oriented activities such as volunteer work, civic and other group activities. My feelings about serving the community can be expressed by this quote from Mother Teresa, “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothe me. I was homeless and you took me in.”…

I want to provide every patient with the quality of care they deserve not the care they could afford. I was not raised in a wealthy family and my love for the medical field developed from the other side of the doctor/ patient exchange, however it is something that is dear to my heart after losing my father a few years ago and a slew of close calls with my mother. I am goal oriented and I succeed at everything I put my mind to. My time in college often went well and however there were times that the stress of my personal life, such as financially supporting my mother the duration of my undergraduate degree and dealing with less than ideal roommates took a toll on my academics. However, after spending ample hours in the medical field through volunteering and shadowing I know that the medical field is exactly where I want…
