AP English Class Reflection

Great Essays
On the 1st day of AP English class all you heard was the clock barely ticking, sweat coming off of the teacher forehead and the students taking out paper and writing utensils to take notes on what we need. What stood out was Mrs. Fantroy’s strong voice along with the books that were shown for everyone to read that semester. The books looked like they could have come from out of ancient tombs or something. She had at least two lengthy looking books. She stated, “These are just some books for you guys to read just this semester. Maybe I will add another one along with the in class reading assignments and work.” All you could hear was kids whispering, “She is nuts thinking I’m going to read all those books.” “I haven’t read that many in all my time in school,” said one of the class clowns. The class burst out laughing along with me to his remark. The teacher stated, “Quiet down class. I will not allow this behavior in my class, you will act as mature youths in here.” Those bulky eyes …show more content…
Fantroy responded with, “Why are you guys so rowdy? What did I state about my classroom? You guys will come in here with some dignity about yourselves.” I always wondered why would she get on to us like that. Well, not me, but she says we all act as a Fam-I-Lee, which Lee was part of our school name. I remembered from my 12th grade AP LIT class, I had to read The Crucible, which of course we would have the same teacher teaching that course as well. The workload only doubled; 20 quotes and their explanations, 15 terms, and plenty of questions within the many questions. They all were due on Fridays with a test. The sounds of snoring were all you heard on some test days. I was not one to give up so easily but did not mind drifting off into a deep sleep where I imagined myself on a breezy, quiet island surrounded by clear blue water. But that was not reality

I have been taking AVID for the past 3 years in order to reach my goal of attending a four year university. I am taking courses that will prepare me for college and my job, such as Pre-Ap english. In Pre-Ap English I have to carefully analyze the text and the directions, or else I will get a bad grade. This class will be immensely helpful, because I will have experience with being very diligent. During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

While observing at P.S 105 X in The Bronx, Mrs. Downs’s second grade classroom is a surprisingly calm, regular classroom with 25 students. The classroom was filled with the students, teacher and paraprofessional. Usually, there is another co-teacher in the classroom; however, she was on maternity leave. When entering the classroom, I could see on the other side of the room, against the windows the wall was filled with books, as well as bins in the back of the classroom. The wall is switched out each month with different books that go along with the unit.…

Reflecting on my midterm progress in English 102, I realize all rhetorical modes need to be employed to have an effective final product. My confidence in my ability to develop and express a clear message to the reader has grown exponentially since English 101. Our initial exploratory writings, Diagnostic Essay and Editorial Analysis, provided me an opportunity to conduct an editorial review on other journalists’ works. Since these assignments, I am now equipped to conduct editorial reviews my own written works allowing for efficient revisions of essays to the professional level.…

Gail said as I entered the room. The class was a small class of fifteen students. It smelled like fresh paint and the room was extremely cold. Every day in class we always had to read aloud. She would pick a passage in our workbook and she would call on students to read certain parts of the passage, but everyone had to read a part of the passage.…

The experience gained through this field experience was very positive and gratifying. The first couple of sessions were like the ground periods, I had to get familiar with Hidden Oaks Elementary School and their ESOL program as well as to meet the team of teachers and their students. I will hope to capture in this reflection the knowledge obtained, the positive aspects, and outcomes of this valuable practice. From the very beginning I felt very comfortable with both teachers and the students’.…

When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. I shyly said hi and sat down at my clean smooth desk. All of the kids stared at me and watched my every move. Feeling embarrassed, I stammered a lot and didn’t look at anyone in the eye for the rest of the day. Junior’s actions when he moved to the new school reminded me of my own. Although he didn’t mean it, Junior somehow humiliated himself on his first day of school by miscommunication and his race.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Sitting at my desk in english class, 15 minutes before the end of the period, feeling a small sense of deep inner satisfaction from my work in the previous double period of Draw/Paint level 4, I held a piece of paper in my hands pertaining the information and guidelines of a common app essay. Somewhat confused, I stared blankly at the paper. The bolded words of the length requirement and the due date stuck out against the pure white like a needle through the skin of my finger. I felt a deep sense of dread as I was trying to brainstorm an immediate idea as to what I could write about. I thought of the lessons I learned from my father on right and wrong.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…
