The Sabbath is a day of rest and worship for the Lord that falls on the seventh day of a seven day cycle. As the details within the commandment explain, the rest day started from the very beginning when God finished His creation in six days and rested on the seventh day (King James Version, Gen. 2.1-3). Rest is a recognition of God: ceasing usual labour to recognize Him as sovereign (Massee 58). For Israel, the Sabbath had special significance; as it was a law, both civil and religious (Massee 61). Many of the Jews did keep the Sabbath, but it was kept so harshly that it was forbidden to tie a knot, light a fire, or move a lamp on the Sabbath (Barclay 27). Yet, in Mark 2:24-28, Jesus picked corn from the fields on the Sabbath “And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath” (King James Version). By Jesus’ actions and words, He showed the Pharisees that God made the Sabbath as a day of rest for mankind’s benefit. To America, the Sabbath has now become recreational; most stores stay open while others close their doors and put ads in the newspapers. Those who do nothing on the Sabbath, fill every free minute, mostly with watching television (Schlessinger and Vogel 97). By being stuck in a time paradox of continuous busyness, Satan tells people that there is plenty of time and that they do not have to put meaningful time into relationships, proper activities, or mortal reality (Schlessinger and Vogel 98). To Christians in America, they keep the Lord’s Day on Sunday (Massee 65). Most Christians go to church on the Lord’s Day to worship Him and remember Jesus’ resurrection.
