Personal Narrative: The Young Women's Resource Center

October 1, 2007 was the second most important day of my young life. It was the day my business officially opened for operations. This day fell a very short second to the date of my daughter and only child’s birth. The business was to be called Love My Curves Ladies Apparel and would offer clothing, accessories and shoes for plus sized women. I designed and sewed by request as well as ordered items from wholesale companies to sell at my retail store location in Des Moines Iowa. I created a website to sell items from and maintained the website myself. I traveled to other cities to meet with other stores to sell and trade inventory. During year two of business operations I received several offers to contract with night clubs and sell them large …show more content…
By this point in time I had sold costumes, accessories and shoes to many young exotic dancers who had spoken to me of the struggles they would endure to support their children or to pay for their education. Many of these young women felt trapped in this job of dancing because they did not have the experience or education to obtain successful careers. It was for this reason I chose to hold a fashion show to celebrate my 30th birthday while supporting the young women of my community. The fashion show had an attendee list exceeding 200 people and it provided a sizeable contribution to The Young Women’s Resource Center. I couldn’t have chosen a better way to celebrate my birthday then by helping others while pursuing my passion. As time passed and the business continued to grow and evolve many changes took place. During the fourth year I began to realize if there were more sales people in the business it would likely double or triple its performance. I contemplated over the details of this decision and it was apparent I would need to hire contracted sales people in the cities where the highest amount of sales were taking …show more content…
They worked very hard to succeed and most of them did and still are in operations. January 1, 2014 I personally took a step back and chose to dissolve my portion of the business to pursue my previous passion of becoming an insurance underwriter. Presently four of the six ladies who I chose to hire, train and mentor are still in close contact via email and phone calls with stories of how they have become successful. They contact me with stories about the opportunities this knowledge has given them and the many ways it has benefited themselves and their families. They share stories about how they have been able to train other exotic dancers to become independent sales women as well. It warms my heart to read these stories and to know that I’ve created the ability for young women to have a career they love that will provide financial support in which they will feel respected while operating each day

I attended a speaker event representing Land O’Lakes Inc. on October 25, 2016 from 6 PM to 7 PM in Blegen Hall, which was presented by Adam. To briefly discuss about the speaker’s education, he finished his undergraduate degree in History and is currently an MBA candidate at the Carlson School of Management with a particular focus on supply chain management. One of the reasons he decided to join the Carlson School of Management to pursue a graduate degree is to seek more career opportunities as he could not find a job within his field after his graduation from college. Besides his academic career, he has a five-year work experience in the Land O’Lakes. Inc.…

Meet Caroline and Isabel Bercaw. You may think these 14 and 15 year old girls are just your average 9th grade students you sit next to in math class, but behind the busy lives they lead as students and athletes, they are very successful business owners of “Da Bomb Bath Fizzers,” a business the sisters created when they where just 10 and 11 years old. Ever since a young age, it seems Caroline’s sister, Isabel, and her have been destined to become entrepreneurs. “Me and Isabel used to make little ‘mini businesses’ that never went anywhere” Caroline told us, “like selling paintings we made to our grandma, and having cookie and lemonade stands”. The Bercaw sister’s art business was followed by many other attempts at making small, successful business.…

Over the course of this semester, I read a book called The Magnolia Story, by Chip and Joanna Gaines. Chip and Joanna Gaines, as you may recognize their names from their hit HGTV show Fixer Upper, have become experts in the business industry. This is because they have spent most of their lives flipping, selling & remodeling houses, learning how to deal with income, saving and spending their profit, and running multiple businesses at once! They started their business, Magnolia homes, and have been remodeling homes for the past 15 years together. All while, Joanna had established her shop called the Magnolia Market where she sold retail home decor.…

“Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?” The poem “The Rose that Grew from Concrete” written by Tupac Shakur, in 1999 was published long after Madam CJ Walker passed, but screams her life story. Many people will be surprised that one of the first American women to become a self-made millionaire was an African American named Madam CJ Walker, also known as Sarah Breedlove. Many will also be uprised that the same person is from a small rural town called, Delta, Louisiana, born to newly free slaves and before the age of 14 becoming an orphan and a cotton picker in Mississippi. Sarah did not let life's hardships hinder her from excelling.…

The earliest I can remember learning that my gender was different and treated differently from someone else’s was probably when I was five or six years old. I always had to wear a dress or an outfit that was always pink. I had to play with dolls and only do things that little girls would normally do and I of course noticed that boys didn’t have to do anything similar to me so I realized that I was being treated differently simply because I was a girl.…

Perhaps none of my activities has frustrated me more than FBLA because of how the main focus was on competitions, which were extremely expensive. Instead of quitting, I became an officer. I persuaded our chapter to try the Partnering with a Business event. We partnered up with SnuggleBugs, a local clothing company, since I wanted FBLA to be more than a means of competition but a means of…

“Congratulations!!” read one post on a friend’s Facebook wall, the day after she landed an office job in her field. “So amazing!” read another. “Are you ready for your big-girl job?” asked a third well-wisher, accompanied by a GIF of Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. “I can’t believe I finally have a real job” was the text she sent me a few days later, from the comfort of her desk, where she had been hired to do operations work for an organization she had once, a few years prior, interned for.…

I went to elementary and middle school in Monroe City, before transferring to South Shelby my freshman year. That was the best decision I’ve made so far in my life. At first, I was worried. I didn’t think that any high school could be so friendly that they didn’t actually need locks on the lockers. But, after my mom talked to the cheerleading coach at the time, I realized that maybe this school is somewhat nice.…

In those few seconds, I knew we were going to be split up into girls and boys, however, I felt more accustomed to going with the guys then the girls, yet I stayed. It felt weird to say we were the oppressed group because we are women, yet I never felt that until I got into college. I never had to think about being a woman, only at times did I ask myself why was I born a woman. I think I felt weird due to being the oldest in my family, my family consists of my parents, my younger sisters and I.…

In the beginning of the semester I thought it’d be the smartest idea to work on the social media branch of my company and call it ABP Social. For the beginning weeks, we went in full steam contacting local businesses, finding their interests, seeing how we can solve their problems. We managed to learn a lot in those weeks, we learned a new method of using Snapchat as a new option for marketing. We sadly didn’t get contacted by Snapchat when we contacted them on the idea, and our number of business contacting started to dwindle as the weeks went by. While we progressed well with the social aspect of the company, I started to realize that our ABP Music branch began to have a rapid acceleration of growth.…
