Everyone has heard the commonly used phrase “trick or treat?” especially around Halloween. It is usually followed by candy or a riddle where a little kid threatens to pull down their underwear. Does anyone truly know where it came from though? Maybe witches in the past used it to torture people or a young child asked the question to their mother one day. Today I Found Out discovered that the practice began with the Celtic tradition of celebrating the end of the year by dressing up as evil spirits. At the end of every year the Celtics believed that the world of the dead and living would overlap and demons would be able to come back to Earth; By dressing up as demons humans camouflaged themselves.
When the Catholic Church took over they deemed that overlapping day “All Hallows Eve” also known as “All Soul’s Day”. People were still dressing up now just more saints and angels then demons. According to, Today I Found Out, beginning in the Middle-Ages, children and some poor adults would dress up in the respective costumes at the time and go around door to door during Hallowmas begging for food or money in exchange for songs and prayers, often said on behalf of the dead. This was called “souling” and the children were called “soulers”.

The earliest known reference to “trick or treat” was printed in the November 4, 1927 edition of the Blackie written by Alberta Canada Herald. From then on the holiday recreated itself to its modern condition now as a children’s holiday and a night to binge out on all sorts of sweets. Maybe next time instead of saying trick or treat try “Because Celtic spirits roam Earth today you should give me candy,” you’ll definitely get a laugh or two for

To many, the end of October is a time of corn mazes, costume parties, and haunted houses. Many cultures celebrate harvest festivals during October, though none are as well-known as Halloween. Because Halloween is primarily descended from the Celtic festival of Samhain, when some think of Halloween, they think of bats and cats and witches. However, although Halloween as it is currently know is a wholly American creation with regional rituals handed down by generations, it did not become a “full-blown American holiday” until the turn of the century (Bannatyne). Because of the contemporary nature of Halloween, without Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Sylvia Plath’s “Lady Lazarus”, and George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, the holiday as we…

The scariest thing about Halloween is the shocking number of calories we can consume in one go without a second thought. It’s like an autumnal version of Easter, just replace the fluffy bunnies and clucking chicks with horrifying clowns and spooky skeletons. Express Vending have crunched the numbers and discovered just how many houses both adults and children would have to trick or treat in order to burn off the sweets they might receive in exchange. While a measly packet of Parma Violets will only set you back 3-4 houses, a full sized Mars Bar could add up to over 40! We’ve, rather sneakily, calculated this information by looking into not only the number of calories adults and children can burn while walking, but also how many houses…
