"Even today, there are moments when what I do seems to me like an improbable, if unusually pleasant dream: to be involved in the exploration of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn; to try to duplicate the steps that led to the origin of life on an Earth very different from the one we know; to land instruments on Mars to search there for life; and perhaps to be engaged in a serious effort to communicate with other intelligent beings, if such there be, out there in the dark of the night sky", I said this in 1973, and it held up till the day I died. I was born on November 9th in 1934. If I could describe myself back then, I'd say I was a childhood science fiction addict. It was when

This passion resulted in an abundance of awards including 22 honorary degrees for my work, medals from NASA for Exceptional Scientific Achievement and the Nasa Apollo Achievement Award, the Public Welfare Medal (the highest award of the National Academy of Sciences), along with many others that I can't remember off the top of my head. When thinking about it now, I lived my life the way many wish they could live theirs: absolutely loving their job. One time I was invited to be a guest on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. After that, I was invited back twenty-six times. We were both skeptics, and I was especially interested in popular misconceptions about science. Course this led to the two public symposia I organized on fringe-science topics. The first one I believe dealt with the reality of UFOs. The second one was about, and I could never forget, the work of Velikovsky, who was invited himself to speak under AAAS sponsorship (American Association for the Advancement of Science). Interesting to note, I was much better at science than I was with love. I had two failed marriages, one with Linda Salzman and the other with Lynn Margulis. I had children with both of them, Nick being the son of Linda, Dorion and Jeremy being the sons of Lynn. It wasn't until I met Ann Druyan that I felt I had gotten the emotion right. She was my colleague and later became my wife. We had two children, Sasha and Sam. It was with Annie that I created

My interest in physics was initially ignited during my sophomore year. I signed up for AP Physics 1, taught by a teacher in his first year, right out of college. His main goal was to encourage students to apply physics to the world around them and identify the relevancy of the course material. I was immediately hooked and I bought book after book about Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the Big Bang, and quantum mechanics. I was eager to learn as much as I could; in doing so, I realized that working in a laboratory setting, conducting experiments and applying equations, is something that I am truly passionate about.…

Cheryl, I appriecated the way you included that Jesus's death was because of how much he loves us. Jesus sacrificed so that we no longer need to make sacrafices to be able to be in relationship with Him. Jesus died so the we could come to him without any impurities in the way holding us back from being close to him. He wants to accept us as we are, love us, and teach us how to become more like him.…

Two weeks before I had my interview with the Honors College directors my house burned down. I remember the horrible day in which I walked into my home to find it full of smoke. My family and I had spent the whole afternoon together, we went to dinner and talked for a while. Once my dad parked the car in front of the house I remember feeling uneasy, something was not right. I got off the car as fast as possible and headed for the door to find a cloud of smoke hitting me across the face.…

It was the happiest time in my life; the beginning of something new and exciting. I was thrilled to start my journey along with the rest of the unfamiliar eyes that had the same mind-set as me. As I transcended from middle school to high school, I saw him – Brad. The boy who had a story to tell and I was ready to listen. We formed a beautiful friendship which lasted only three years and turned out to be devastating.…

There are two certain things in life, birth and death. Choices are easy to make when you are alive, because you know what you want, and you may execute them yourself, but once you do kick the bucket those choices are no longer as easy to make, because others have to make them for you. Should people not know what it is you want then it is really hard. Funerals can be a lot of hard work to plan and go through not only emotionally, but physically as well. For my funeral I would like to begin it, by my death being announced on the radio, o the department where I worked the longest.…

One of my dreams as a child, making a revolutionary discovery, has followed me for the duration of my life. In school, hearing about such names as Einstein, Newton, or Curie, I can’t say that I didn’t dream to be among those names. Nevertheless, the fame never piqued my interest; the thought of contributing a discovery that benefits everyone on Earth catalyzed my foray into bettering my knowledge. My knowledge, what I can offer, to improve humanity, what more could I yearn. I find efforts to ameliorate humanity, beyond those that make a sacrifice to do so, are the noblest.…

Up until high school, I have never experienced science as I did in a high school environment, specifically in DRS, where I fell in love with chemistry in 10th grade. It was so interesting to look at the different ways our environment, even ourselves, at a cellular level interact with one another. This love for the science influenced me to take upon myself the challenge of AP Chemistry. So far I have further developed and honed my skills. I have further ingrained in myself the idea to question everything.…
