The Darkness Out There is a story written by Penelope Lively, she presents the theme of good and bad. Therefore this story starts with two teenagers working for a pensioner Mrs Rutter. Penelope Lively presents the metaphor “Darkness” which represents everyone has a dark side inside them and this theme was projected on Mrs Rutter because in the Good Neighbours Club she was seen as a nice lady and this also shows that although people have a good side, they also have a dark side. “They were really nice some of the people” this presents that Mrs Rutter was seen as nice lady as she was seen by the people in good neighbours club. However nobody knew about the German pilot she left to die in agony.

Kerry Stevens was also stereotyped “Kerry Stevens that none of her lot reckoned so much on, with this black licked-down hair and slitty eyes, some people you only have to look at to know they’re not up to much” this projects that Sandra did not know Kerry that much and by his looks he seemed like he was not doing anything in life. The theme of goodness is also projected by helping Mrs Rutter “I expect you’re nice strong boy, aren’t you? I daresay you’d like to have a go at the grass with the old mower”. This shows that Kerry was strong boy who was helping Mrs Rutter mower her loan as she was an old lady so she could not do it by herself. However Kerry Stevens also represents the theme of darkness “I’m not going near that bitch old bitch again” this shows Kerry was disrespectful towards Mrs Rutter, although she left the German soldier to die in rain. Kerry also shows his dark side because young people should show respect to elders, “clenching his fist on an iron rung” this also projects Kerry sort of made a violent act towards Mrs Rutter because the soldier that was left to die in
