The article, “The Evil Swirling Darkness” by Lauren Tarshis, said that people ignored the first signs of warning that a tornado was coming. This shows that danger can be real, even if you don’t think it is. For example, the text states that, “The family prayed for the safety of their missing relatives.” There were survivors, and they had hardships in and after the disaster. There are many effects of tornados.…

In a book titled “Lone Survivors” by Chris Stringer, Stringer presents to us his interpretations of the origin of modern humans. Previously, there were two fossils including a tooth and a finger of a female and male, found in the Denisova cave of Siberia which revealed a species that was perhaps indirectly related to both the Neanderthals as well as Homo Sapiens. In addition, they have unique features that are enough to separate them to their own distinct species. These fossils convinced Stringer that perhaps modern humans today are not a pure species but rather a mixture of other hominid groups. Neanderthal genes may still be in us.…

When it comes to being put in a crisis, people have different mechanisms to cope. Avoiding the reality of an unpleasant situation is a common theme in both William Stafford’s Traveling through the Dark, and Shoshauna Shy’s Bringing My Son to the Police Station to be Fingerprinted. Both poems use literary elements such as diction and imagery to exemplify different ways of coping when put in a high-stress position. Although these two poems share a similar theme, each author uses the literary elements in different ways to convey the same message.…

Human beings are a “subterranean-impaired bunch” according to ecologist David Wolfe in his book, Tales from the Underground. This means that we’re unable to see what is underneath us. This is opposed to plants which have a corresponding weight of roots below them. The mirrored root system that plants have, particularly for vegetables like carrots, allows them to define themselves beyond what meets the eye. Wolfe wrote his book to give insight into a world below ground, but it also illuminates a fundamentality of human existence.…

It is often debated whether or not films can be used as a historical source. People such as Ian Jarvie, an English philosopher, argue that films are nothing more than mere entertainment. He said that “At best, film is a visual aid.”. On the other hand, you have people like French theorist, Pierre Sorlin, who said that “historians have admitted for a long time that films are important pieces of evidence for any study of the twentieth century and it is no longer necessary to justify an incursion into this field”. Films can be used as a historical source because they can put the audience in the time and in the setting of the event that the film is portraying.…
