Delores Phillips does amazing job relating her debut book The Darkest Child to the hard times of Georgia of in 1950’s. Her novel captivates reader and sends the audience into the rough times of Tangy Mae’s life. Tangy Mae is the 6th child of her biracial mother Rozelle Quinn, she has to step up to the plate when her mother gets pregnant with her 10th child, Tangy now has to care for her mother as well as her siblings. Tangy goes through her childhood feeling like she doesn’t fit in, or live up to her mother standards. Her family is very poor and it is up to Tangy and siblings to provide for the family. All of the characters in the book are very unique and different in their own ways, Phillips gives each character and strong, powerful personality, either good or bad they leave a mark on you. Tangy Mae, the main character is a strong, courageous and incredibly smart, young girl who has to take on many responsibilities. It is very easy to relate to her mindset, a 13 year old who just wants to get away from the troubles that the world is throwing at her. Most, if not all the characters can remind the reader of themselves or someone they know, while reading the book, the characters all leave the readers with a lasting effect. Readers will experienced tons of emotions while reading the darkest child, such as: love, joy, anger, grieve and sadness. Phillips describes the characters emotions in a way that anyone could experience. This allows readers to in a way experience the problems they face in the novel. In this piece from the book, ' 'Something in her tone jarred me and awakened my hibernating foresight, I saw . . . Mama danced across the floor at a side angle. . . . The belt snapped, then struck and seemed to wrap around my head like a tourniquet. ' ' This is a quote from Tangy, it gives a great sneak peek into her intellectual mind.
