Every 53 minutes there is one person killed by an alcohol impaired driver in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2016). To being, alcohol is a well-known misused beverage, despite its adverse effects on the human body, society and the economy. The United States spent $249 billion dollars in 2010 (CDC, 2016). Whether it involves drinking on occasion, weekly or daily throughout this article it will discuss the impact alcohol can have. Furthermore, it will entail diagnosis and treatment for patients along with families suffering from alcohol abuse.

An alcoholic may spend their money on alcohol instead of things of higher priority such as mortgage, food and bills. They may reject themselves from others and find excuses for their drinking habits. Alcohol may cause unpredictable behaviors such as anger and violence causing family to fear their loved one. Families may lose their trust and become hopeless.
Rehabilitation, counseling, community resources and pharmacotherapy may be included in treatment of the alcohol abuser. Pharmacotherapy prescribed by the medical professional may include benzodiazepines for substitution therapy, anticonvulsant medications for the management of withdrawal seizures, and multivitamin therapy with thiamine may be ordered by the attending physician.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a peer support organization found in just about every community to help achieve and continue sobriety by using the Twelve Steps philosophy guidelines. Support groups are also available for families of alcoholics such as Al-Anon, Children Are People and Adult Children of Alcoholics (Townsend, 2015). Stress and coping strategies may need to be viewed and are important to not resulting to alcohol consumption.
