Everything you have ever seen or encountered while using search engines on the internet is what’s known as the surface web. The surface web only accounts for about thirty percent of the actual internet; the other seventy percent belongs to what is known as the Deep Web. This mysterious term basically just describes every database and website that cannot be accessed through the traditional search engine. While this does include scholarly databases, such as the content found on NCLive, I am going to focus on the darker side of the Deep Web. This section of the internet is home to many of the things that normal, law-abiding citizens fear. Everything from child pornography, to organ markets, to “hackers for hire” can be accessed on the Deep Web. Terrorist groups are even known to use it as a method of communicating with one another. The reason that political leaders tend to avoid talking about it is because it is outside of any government’s power to try and control. Any attempt made to control the Internet is almost always shut down by citizens. I am one of those people that agree that the Internet in a living, breathing culture in itself, but I want to talk about one thing I find to be truly horrifying about the Internet: that you can hire hitmen to find and kill people. There is a lot of fear associated with the word “socialist” and with good reason too. National socialism is also called Nazism. The Nazi Party pushed to eliminate social diversity through means of traditionalism and national unity. They believed that anyone not a part of the Aryan race was a threat to peace throughout the world. This mindset is obviously wrong and just outright evil. Democratic socialism is on a different side of the political spectrum. Because of the word “socialism” being a part of the name, democratic socialism is often attributed to totalitarianism. Socialism refers to an economic system in which the economy is controlled by the community as a whole, whereas totalitarianism refers to a political system in which every aspect of a community is controlled by an absolute government. Communism is another reason why socialism is often feared. In a communist society, capital is theoretically distributed equally, thus making everyone have the same ownership of everything in the country. This certain political system collapsed because of individual greed. Democratic socialism is very different from both Nazism and Communism because rather than the government deciding what equal distribution is or who should be allowed to live in society, the economy is decided by a democratic majority.
