The smell is what she noticed first, a combination of sawdust and lemon cleaner that filled her nose with its gentle scent. Inhaling deeply, she allowed the breath to fill her entirely. Every space between the arteries in her veins down through the tips of her toes as she began to walk across the stage. The caramelized wood was slippery beneath the daunting heel of her shoe, but she did not waver for the even a slight moment. Walking as her mother would, straightened back with an aura of determination radiating from within her, she made her way through the blinding lights to the center of the stage.
Anticipation drummed within her ears. Brightness overwhelmed her. Quiet murmurs taunted from the darkness of the auditorium as she unlatched the

“You have the gift.” He told her proudly.
“What do you mean?”
He paused for a moment, as though trying to piece together what he meant. Speaking slowly he began to explain.
“You see most people think that a song can only have lyrics if there is someone singing it. But you see a true musician, the ones with the gift, they’re able to find voices within the song regardless there are words. You listen in a way that others fail to recognize. It’s up to us to listen closely to the words in the melody, decipher what it means, and to illustrate it to those around us so that they can interpret music the same way that we can hear it.” Josephine’s fingers flew frantically across the neck as she thought of the first moment she played those strings, and it had sounded like a cat had fallen into the garbage disposal. Her dad hadn’t laughed at her, he just smiled reassuringly and told her to try again. All of the performances, the late night practicing, and calloused fingers. When asked at graduation what she wanted to do with her life, many scoffed at the idea of pursuing music.
“Oh that’s a nice hobby and all, but how do you plan on making any

Sleepless nights spent with assortments of parchment torn or crumpled on the ground next to her in frustration, yet another failed attempt to bring the music in her head to life. Then, something would suddenly just click. There were no other words to describe it. As though the missing chord or note just tumbled into place. Now she stood valiantly before the crowd presenting the gift. Her tale was one of sorrow, of doubt and uncertainty. It began a slow and melancholy melody, but then it changed. She sang without her lips ever parting. The story rang out. It was one of compassion: how the uncertainty began to fade away as her pen touched the paper, and the pieces began to fall into place. All along what she was looking for concealed among the strings of her violin. As her story drew to a close she played with all she had, the melody drifting forward from her fingers as the gift devoured her. Josephine could feel the intensity strengthen. With one final note, the song faded. The applause rang out just as the last chords resonated through the air. Josephine stood among it all, her long silver dress glimmering still long after the lights dimmed away, and departed in search of her next

I remembered that the lyrics tried to convey to us the logic of war being inevitable and that what was once on the grounds of the battlefield will be replaced my new things. In a way I was able to interpret that as a new beginning but also a true sad part of our life. The fact that she used an inspiring tone to talk to us, she drew us in with the climax tension of the song. Even when it seemed like the song was dying out, she and the other performers managed to keep us in with the groove of the music till the song had ended…

I was over ecstatic when Fernando, (also known as Fernie) my best guy friend asked me to go on a walking adventure with him in our hometown of Kelseyville, California. We started off the day by walking in the forest alongside of Kelsey Creek. This forest has a really big meaning to Fernie and I, because we both love nature in every aspect and these walking adventures are not uncommon to us. Starting on the path we both got lost in our own thoughts, I got distracted by looking above me at the the canopy the tree branches created. My eyes followed the patterns the sunlight was creating as it broke through the leaves and cascaded onto the uneven forest floor.…

A slate sky hung over the Santa Cruz mountains, loosing a persistent drizzle from swollen, purplish clouds that seemed to bruise the morning. Below, an L-shaped house cut into the steeply inclined corner of Debby Lane and West Park Avenue, its sprawling grounds perched on the rock wall surrounding the property. The front door rested wide on its hinges, framing the red-brick patio and sloping lawn beyond it like a photograph. Inside, Abigail Crawford stood inside the foyer watching the rain fall. The dark orbs of her pupils, filling her wide eyes until little more than a sliver of their color was visible.…

It was the second week middle school when my band teacher had asked for me to stay after class: “Rachel you should think about quitting the band.” At that moment, I had felt my mind go blank; I was devastated. I had always known I was a bit behind in learning the notes and developing the sound of my tone; however, I had never once thought about quitting band. I loved music; just turning on the radio brightened my mood. I felt impatient in my other classes, waiting until I could go and pick up my instrument.…

I was in seventh grade when I decided to stop playing the piano. By then, I’ve already been taking lessons for around four years. I told my parents that music isn’t important, and making me take lessons is just a waste of money because I don’t even enjoy it. Little did I know about how big a role playing an instrument, or just music in general played during my high school years and my perspective on life.…

Introduction: Have you ever had a song stuck in your head that you just can 't get out? Have you ever hummed a catchy tune unintentionally? And as for your favorite songs, do you ever wonder what the entire process was from start to finish? Its questions like these that make you wonder just what makes music so compelling, and how does it affect us psychologically. Music is an ever expanding world with endless possibilities and what I strive to find is the neuroscience of how music affects the perception and emotion of the listeners, some of the many things it can do to the body, and with everything I hope to learn how to grow as an artist.…
