“I think the logic goes something like this: If we don 't expect greatness, if we don 't expect to find love and be healthy and successful, well we 're not going to be disappointed when these things don 't happen. And if we 're not disappointed when good things don 't happen, and we 're pleasantly surprised when they do, we will be happy” (Sharot, Tali). People are more likely to be happier when they are surprised about something good happening to them. If they display a positive happy attitude towards everything, they would not feel the joy of something truly amazing happening. To have bad experiences that either turned out well or not so well makes a person much more interesting, especially when they are around to tell the story. To be “happy” is to satisfy the things that are needed in everyday life, such as money, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that people are happy personally. Almost every situation will have a negative flaw in it, only some will pay more attention to them than others. “Doing things to express oneself and caring about personal and cultural identity were linked to a meaningful life but not a happy one. For example, considering oneself to be wise or creative was associated with meaning but not happiness” (Marsh). Happiness doesn’t reveal itself when the best of things happen, or with the values and traits of a person. It can, however, be expressed through the worst of times, such as surviving and living past events that could be critical to your life. During the critical moments, there was probably plenty of negative thoughts and ideas that were pleasantly shrugged off with happiness because they never went into full action.
