The story A Goodman Is Hard to Find and Young Goodman Brown both illustrate a lack of honesty that exist in the world we currently live in. The stories depict a world where deceitfulness is abundant. Where evil is lurking ultimately revealing itself and that the good in the world is like a rare gem, rarely sparkling and showing its existence. Both stories illustrate characters are battling their own inner evil demons and struggling with their desired self-perception. In A Goodman Is Hard to Find the grandmother states, “people aren’t what they use to be.” (O’Connor, p. 1178) Speaking about how no one can be trusted these days. The grandmother constantly critiques her grandchildren for not being respectful and spoke about how people use to show more respect and appreciate their family and home state that they originated from. The Misfit for a moment agrees with the grandmother that he came from good people even stating, “God never made a finer woman than my mother and my daddy’s heart was pure gold.”(O’Connor, p. 1182) He speaks about being a gospel singer for a while and then quickly shifts to other jobs and experiences he has had, to include seeing a man burned alive which could be related to him serving in the armed service abroad. In the end the Misfit gives in to his inner evil and has his crew kill Bailey, his wife and children and shoots the grandmother himself. Justifying his evil nature in the lack of meaning in life. Whereas, Goodman Brown in the end gives in to the devils temptations. He attends the evil ceremony and see’s the dark side of his loved ones and members of his community.
