An event that inspired me to write my journal was the mass murder act James Holmes committed on July 20th, 2012. The tragic event took place in a theater in Aurora, Colorado where the individuals watched Batman, The Dark Knight Rises. Before the movie ended, Holmes changed into his Joker costume and quickly returned to fulfill his role: killing innocent people. In order to do this, he threw smoke explosives in between numerous aisles to prevent individuals from leaving. As the confused and scared individuals tried to escape or hide, Holmes fired over 240 rounds of ammunition only stopping once to reload the gun. Individuals with schizophrenia can display both positive and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms are additional behaviors and feelings that schizophrenia have that normal individuals to not have, while negative symptoms are what schizophrenics lack that regular individuals have. According to the text, positive symptoms include delusions and hallucinations. Delusions are beliefs that are not true and can include: delusions of persecution, delusions of grandeur, delusion of reference, delusion of erotomania. Hallucinations, “false sensory perceptions” can be categorized into different section such as: auditory, visual, gustatory, olfactory, somatic, and tactile hallucinations. Positive symptoms can also include disorganization in their speech, thinking, and behavior. Negative symptoms of schizophrenia can include: asociality (lack of social interaction), alogia (telegraphic speech), avolition (lack of motivation), anhedonia (lack of pleasure), or flat affect (lack of facial emotion). The individual with schizophrenia can display either positive or negative depending on which of the three phases of schizophrenia they are in: prodromal, active, or residual. In the prodromal phase, the individual will only show negative symptoms, while in the active phase the individual will show both negative and positive symptoms. I think it is important that Holmes receives treatment, even in jail, since his behavior not only affects him, but can affect other inmates as well. This is important because schizophrenia never goes away completely; therefore, it is important to treat it before it gets worse. For example, Holmes can receive antipsychotic drugs to decrease his level of dopamine and psychotherapy. While inmates are working in different areas of the jail, such as preparing the food , to gain commissary, Holmes can receive sheltered workshop treatment. Here he would be supervised by officers where he can learn the important roles of community and the importance of hard work. By completing different occupational tasks and rules, such as showing up on time and producing good work, Holmes would able to learn different jobs like the rest of the inmates. It is also important the Holmes receives cognitive-behavioral therapy so he can learn change their reactions to delusions and
