The Dark Fame of Edgar Allan Poe Once upon a dreary night in the country of America in the year of eighteen O nine during the first month on the ninth day, the life of Edgar Allan Poe began. After a rough early life, Poe became a writer whose writings exemplified the mind of the writer and the struggles the writer previously endured in a tragic family life, fallen relationships, and failed attempts at college. However, one thing remained with Poe, the talent to depict a scene made only of words. Poe wrote in the romanticism period where he would become a defining writer because of his unique writing ability. An example of Allen Poe’s morbid genius style is a couple of lines from his work “The Raven”: Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token. (Lines 25 – 27) Poe wrote puzzles that were carefully put together with each piece harmoniously fitting together, allowing for Poe to incorporate dark, bizarre tales that became irresistible to be able to contain fright and excitement (Buranelli 32). The style of Poe is twisted with dark uniqueness that established the style to be from the forsaken depths of the earth. So odd yet captivating, Poe has marveled millions of readers worldwide with his magical abilities to create an inner mythological morbid painting of the soul. One of the literary devices Poe uses in his works is symbolism. Poe uses symbolism in the form of any object that might be in one of his works (Zayed 82 – 83). In “The Raven” Poe symbolizes the raven as a messenger of bad news. Another literary device illustrates in his written art is the use of allegories that Poe gracefully maneuvered in his writings (Wilbur 111). Contrary to the literary devices that Poe uses to describe darkness, is his tasteful yet old-fashioned humor, proving that Poe can laugh joyfully and not only laughing in the psychotic manner (Justus 120). Poe’s success could not have reached the pinnacle of fame without his excellent uses of literary devices that contributed to the full completion of Poe’s
