Have you ever thought of putting spyware on your child’s computer? In the article ‘‘Undercover Parent’’, Harlan Coben discusses how most parents won’t even consider putting spyware on their child’s computer. From my point of view parents should put spyware on their child’s computer. Some parents will say that it’s better to use parental blocks that deny access to risky sites. For example, if your child looked up porn, your child would not have access to that website.…

Harlan Coben posted an online news editorial, titled “The Undercover Parent” (16 March 2008) that suggests to parents that they should have conversations about their teens, and let them know spyware, on their computer, is a possibility. The author was first told about spyware by his friends at a dinner; since then, he has explored the thought of placing spyware on children’s computers. Coben’s purpose was to persuade parents to place spyware on their children’s, or to at least think about it, to monitor their children’s internet usage. The intended audience of this article is parents with children/teens who go on or use the internet.…

The use of the internet has become a go to resource for child predators across the nation. In United States Federal Courts, the argument has been presented that the sentences in relation to §2G2.2 of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines Manual which outlines the trafficking in material involving the sexual exploitation of a minor (Federal Sentencing Guidelines Manual , 2011). The argument being is this section of the sentencing guidelines are congressionally directed rather than empirically being empirically based. Do you think using spyware to monitor your children is a invasion of privacy? I do not, I was raised by my parents knowing that I do not have rights till I am eighteen or I am out of their house. I have reached an age to understand where my parents are coming from now, and why my parents went through my phone, computer, and diary’s as often as they did; they were just doing their job as my caregiver. In the op-ed article “The Undercover Parent,” by Harlan Coben (2008) claims that spyware is a great way to monitor their children’s internet activity.…

Harlan Coben’s article, “The Undercover Parent”, (2008) claims that parents think it’s okay to put spyware on their child’s computer. I disagree with his claim, and think children's’ computers don’t need it. ONe example to sup[ports why I disagree with COben is when he says “some will say you should simply trust your child.” (6) A lot of parents just assume they can’t trust their child, but they’ve never given them a chance to win their parents trust or show that they can be responsible online. Another example from the article is when the author said “If he is old enough to go on the internet then he is old enough to know the dangers.”…

Coben, the author of “The Undercover Parent,” believes that parents should put spyware on their children’s computers to protect them from the dangers of the internet. Spyware is software that you can download onto any computer that allows you to to monitor everything that your child is doing on that computer. I agree with Coben that parents should monitor their children’s internet use; however, I don’t agree that they should use spyware to do so because it is an invasion of privacy. Parents should monitor their children’s internet use by occasionally checking to see what they are doing online. By monitoring their internet use this way, the children will still have privacy, but their parents still know what they are doing online.…

Harlan Coben argues in his op-ed, “The Undercover Parent” (2008) that parents should use spyware to monitor their children’s online without being an invasion of their privacy, though it may be uncomfortable for them to do so. He writes in an informal tone for parents of teens who use the Internet at home for his purpose to inform parents of the dangers of the Internet in order to increase their children’s protection online. I disagree with Coben’s case about how parents should monitor their children’s Internet at home. Coben claims that parents who have Internet access at home and do not use spyware are negligent of their children’s safety online. However, spyware isn’t the only option to keeping your children safe when browsing the Internet…
