George Orwell was known as an English novelist, essayist, and critic in Great Britain. According to Orwell, his book reflects events from the Russian Revolution to Satalinist era of Soviet Union. His target audience was the general public of Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) which is a former communist country in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. The reason behind why he wrote this novel is to inform people the dangers and logical outcome of Communism during World War II. The book is a “fairy story” which uses different animals in a farmyard to portray the history of Soviet communism. According to Orwell, the animals that are used in the story play a role based directly on Communist Leaders. Like Mr. Jones who depicts the figure of the failing farmer, signifies Czar Nicholas II. Old Major, portrays Vladimir Lenin; Snowball who represents the pig who wants to act like Old Major and Napoleon the one who drove out Snowball to secure his position symbolizes Joseph Stalin. The story began when Mr. Jones, the owner of the Manor Farm, mistreated the animals. Almost all of them are unhappy the way Mr. Jones operates the whole farm. They gather and organized a rebellion to those who reap the benefits of their combined labor, which is the human. Furthermore, as pig is the cleverest of them all, they take over and overruled the other animals. Eventually, the pigs deprave the revolution and form totalitarianism, which is more cruel and oppressive than the human. (“Weak or strong, clever or simple, we are all brothers. All animals are equal.”) Orwell believes, no matter what status we have in life we are all equal. We obtain power but we should not overuse it for our own goods.
