The Dangers of the Digital World Caused by Technology in Fahrenheit 451

“Our technological powers increase, but the side effects and potential hazards also escalate.” This quote was spoken by Alvin Toffler, an American writer and futurist, known for his works discussing the digital revolution, communication revolution and technological singularity. Mr. Toffler recognizes our advancement in technology but also warns that there are negative impacts of these advancements in our society. In the book Fahrenheit 451 technology is portrayed as having a negative effect on society. Evidence has found that our ties to technology has caused shorter attention spans, ineffective communication, and social isolation.

Too much technology can lead to people becoming more connected with their device instead of actual people in the outside world. For example in the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Mildred is always described as having a “seashell” listening device in her ear and only pays attention to the paurlor wall. ”She was an expert at lip reading from ten years of apprenticeship at seashell ear thimbles she nodded again.”(Bradbury 16) Further on throughout the story Mildred and Montag have a conversation in which they say “Will you turn the parlour off’ he asked ‘That 's my family’”(Bradbury 46) This shows that when Montag asked Mildred to turn of the wall she said no because it is her “family”.
