Parents, Drivers, Texters… Everyone is warned about texting while driving. Cell phones help people stay in close contact with loved ones, but cell phones can be disastrous. Yet there are still thousands of deaths caused by texting while driving every year.

Although people see the destruction that texting while driving can cause, they continue to do it. Several studies show that texting while driving is worse than being legally drunk and driving. Laws should be made and enforced against texting while driving throughout the United States.

The National Motor Vehicle crash causation survey shows that 18% of accidents were due to distracted non-driving, such as texting or emailing, related activities. One year, 5,474 people were killed due to distracted driving in the United States alone. 448,000 people were injured due to distracted driving. 16% of all fatal crashes involving those under 20 years of age involved texting

Only ten states ban talking on a hand-held phone. Meanwhile, 39 states have enacted texting-while-driving laws that ban texting while driving. However, most people are not following these laws.

Cell phones were put on the market for business executives to use as car phones. Cell phones help people stay in close contact with friends and family. Parents want their children to own a cell phone as added safety and convenience. With a cell phone, someone is never more than a phone call or text away. However, cell phones can be a distraction inside and outside of a car. Is a text worth it?

Texting while driving can be deadly. No one benefits from texting while driving. One way this can be stopped is an app that locks your phone until the car is stopped. This app can have a password that needs to be put in so the phone is unable to be used until the password is put in.
