Most students are under a constant pressure to maintain good grades and score high on the SATs. This could be because their main goal is college. Colleges nowadays require a lot of students. Drea Christopher, a freelance writer, wrote an article about what causes teen stress in her article she stated, “ The students feel pressure to complete daily classwork and homework assignments, finish projects and study for exams. In addition to the quest for good grades, teens may also participate in extracurricular activities, such as sports, student council, cheerleading and clubs” (Christopher). Students are setting up impossible schedules; between school, homework, family, relationships, some even jobs, and extracurricular they do not have enough time in a week to get all done. This causes them to become stressed out. Here is where teachers can come and help their students! Now, not giving students homework is not the answer, however setting up a system at school is. For example, teachers could set up their test days, so that not every test is on the same day. This makes it easier for teens to keep up with their studying. However that is false information, in a book about how to prevent suicide called, “The Power to Prevent Suicide: A guide for Teens Helping Teens” by Richard E. Nelson, Ph.d and Judith C. Galasstates, “If someone stops them from carrying out their plans and shows them where to get help, it is most likely that they will never make another attempt in their lives” (25). In other words, suicide is definitely preventable. This proves that teens give off warning signs before they commit suicide. In a memoir called,Girl, Interrupted, Susanna Kaysen writes, “Suicide is a form of murder - premeditated murder. It isn 't something you do the first time you think of doing it. It takes getting used to. And you need the means, the opportunity, the motive” (Kaysen). This quote is stating that when someone thinks of suicide, they do not just go on and kill themselves. They have to continue to be pushed to their breaking point. Here is where the warning signs start to some in, warning signs that people around the teen can see. A few examples of these warning signs are, dramatic mood changes, acting recklessly, giving away prized possessions, and changes in habits (Suicide.org).
