Teen suicide has become a huge problem in the world today due to depression and bullying. Surprisingly, “More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, combined. . . . Countless innocent teenagers have taken their lives because they felt as if they did not deserve a place in this world, and unfortunately suicide is a common way that teenagers die. . . . Suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages ten to twenty-four” (“Youth”). In addition, steps must to be taken in order to show these teenagers that there are multiple reasons why they deserve to live in this world. Everyone deserves a life and no one should feel as if they are not important or good enough. Society must work more effectively to prevent teen suicide by recognizing the teen’s behavior, offering help to the suicidal teen, and providing more punishment to bullies. A first step in decreasing teen suicide is by recognizing the behaviors in teenagers. Sadly, friends and family often do not realize that the teen is becoming suicidal. In addition, many parents say, “My child is just going through a phase,” or, “My child is just acting out for attention.” This attitude is the difference between life and death because, “Four out of five teens who attempt suicide have given clear warning signs” (“Youth”).
