Smoking About 8.6 million people in United States smoke. We all know that smoking causes lung disease, heart disease and cancer. It is written on cigarette packs that “smoking is injurious to health”. But millions of people in United States and around the world still smoke. Why do people still smoke? A lot of people smoke because their friends also smoke. Some people smoke to relieve stress, while others smoke just to fit in, but all they are fitting into is cancer. Almost seventy percent of adults began smoking before they turned eighteen, according to cdc.gov. Smoking reduces the average life span. Nicotine patches release a steady stream of nicotine into the bloodstream through the skin, and nicotine gum delivers nicotine through the lining in your mouth. Another alternative to smoking is the electronic cigarette. It is not as harmful as the regular cigarette. Exposure to secondhand smoke irritates the airways and has an immediate harmful effect on person’s heart and blood vessels. People next to a smoker can get harmful chemicals in their body too. When you breathe in smoke which comes from the end of lit cigarette, or that is exhaled by a smoker, you are inhaling almost the same amount of chemicals as the smoker breathes in.
