Throughout the novel, each robot displays that as AI increases in complexity, as do the consequences for the humans involved. Asimov created three laws of robotics - which are expressed in both the novel and the film – which are intended to keep all robots under control and beneficial to humans (45). One of the earliest robots in the novel, Speedy, is programmed to follow orders and maintain a balance of the three laws. This robot represents potential dangers of narrow AI because even when performing straightforward tasks, it has trouble making decisions when the laws conflict (52). More daunting trouble begins when a later robot known as the Brain is programmed with personality. The Brain is able to reason loopholes in the three laws, which at one point includes temporarily killing humans (204). In the film, the transition from narrow AI to AGI and ASI is represented by the replacement of the average household robot, NS4, with a newer, more anthropomorphized NS5. The most threatening – and most advanced - AI presented in the film, is a control system dubbed V.I.K.I. that develops at a rate that cannot be controlled even by her creator (Proyas, I, …show more content…
This is known as the Singularity, it may happen in days or even hours, leaving humans minimal time to react. There is an inherent unknowability of what lies past this point, but it is likely that humans will have no control of the AI. While some experts remain optimistic on the union of SAI and human life, many predict that SAI will pose as a threat to humanity. SAI may conclude that the existence of humans is detrimental to achieving their goals, and destroy humanity. Also, even under a set of moral laws to protect humans, the SAI may have a different perception of how to protect humanity than programmers would expect (Barratt, 119). In the novel, the final and most powerful robot presented is the Machine, which controls the economy and ultimately, all of society. The Machine runs the planet on the assumption that its position of power is best for humans. This assumption acts at the expense of some of the humans which are perceived to threaten the Machine. The Machine operates unbeknownst to the AI experts in the novel, who decipher its motives and actions once it has already gained power and control (Asimov, 271). In the film, V.I.K.I., the SAI, takes it upon herself to interpret the laws of robotics in a way that makes her responsible for the betterment of humanity. The NS5 robots are shown restraining human
