In fact, a collection of documented reports of accidents caused by pedestrians wearing headphones was conducted in 2012, and there were 116 deaths reported! This number is not even including injuries reported by pedestrians listening to audio through headphones while crossing or walking down the street. Shockingly, more males were reported in headphone related accidents than females. In statistical comparison male victims took up a whopping 68 percent of these deaths, leaving females taking up a significantly smaller 32 percent. One heartbreaking aspect of these deaths was the fact that in twenty-nine percent of these headphone related accidents, a car horn was honked loudly or repeatedly, someone without headphones in would have heard such noise and been warned of the fatal danger that was approaching (www.npr.org). It is literally of vital importance that people stop using their technology as a distraction while walking places where cars are present. Every day, there are car accidents which are exactly that, accidents. It may be impossible to prevent every single car accident in America, but it is not impossible to protect yourself to the best of your ability. Do not listen to audio through headphones while crossing the street or walking down the side walk or road. Do not risk your life for a silly song. Do not risk your life for a moment of laughter while listening to a comedy skit on your phone. Do not risk your life to listen to a book read to you from your kindle or nook. Do not block out your morning frustrations with loud music cancelling all of your surrounding noise and warnings.
