Many students’ parents do not feel the need to monitor social media accounts so their kids do not even need to think twice about posting whatever they feel appropriate and necessary. It is because of this, that many adolescents unconsciously participate in cyber harassment. Just because they are unaware of the harm they are inflicting on the victim does not mean they are not going to be found guilty. Once one negative post is uploaded to the internet, others begin to chime in without realizing the damage that is occurring. After ten, negative comments are posted about the same individual, it is considered to be a digital-pile-on. This is a crime and all who posted can and usually will be punished. It does not matter whether one started it or simply tweeted, ‘I never liked you anyways.’ All participants may receive consequences. This is not a well known fact for many school age kids. They think that as long as they do not start the harassment, they cannot get in trouble. This false idea may be the reason that so many teenage kids are charged with and accused of some sort of harassment, whether it be face-to-face or online.
