The production for this plastic is derived from crude oil. American water bottled factories use 1.5 million barrels of oil a year; that is enough oil to fuel 100,000 cars for a whole year (Sexton par 6). “It [takes] three liters of water to produce one liter of bottled water,” that is more than three times more inefficient that tap water (Ferdman par 21).
TW Convenience: One quarter of all bottled water is actually tap water, so it would better the environment to just fill up a reusable water bottle to save the planet and money (Ferdman par 23). The United States has the “healthiest tap water on earth,” which is available to almost all of the fifty states. If someone is worried about their tap water being contaminated the Safe Drinking Water Act makes sure that the water is tested four times a year and essentially make sure that the tap water is safe for consumption (Sexton par 3-4).
