According to the USDA in 2010 an approximate 97,000 animals suffered pain during experiments while being given no anesthesia for relief. Furthermore, even though the Animal Welfare Act was passed for these purposes the act does not cover rats, mice, fish, and birds which make up about 95% of animal used in research.
There are organizations that stress the importance of animal research and advocate on this behalf. Michael Stebbins, member of the BioMedical Research, states, “ Many people believe that animal research is done only to benefit humans. In fact, people and animals share about 50 of the same diseases. Doctors and veterinarians share almost 100 of the same medicines to heal humans and animals.”

According to Zandra Anderson, Texas Dog Lawyer, states, “Animal cruelty punishments have increased gradually over the years, but punishment in most cases is still light.” Animal cruelty is regarded as misdemeanor or a felony depending of the severity of the case but most cases fall within misdemeanors. Again why not tougher punishments? Anderson states, “Space is an issue so if they have to choose between a child abuser and animal abuser going to jail, you can see what the choice will be.” Animal cruelty exists and even though regulations and laws have not changed drastically to protect animals from abuse awareness has. Thanks to social media, more cases are being investigated and allow for the general public to become aware of this issue and better educated to make a difference.
By having increased awareness and knowledge a better future awaits for animals of all
