“…a student told me that it was such a shame that all Nigerian men were physical abusers like the father character in my novel. I told him that I had just read a novel called “American Psycho” and that is was such a shame that young Americans were serial murderers” (Adichie). This shows the audience the single story that the young man gave the Nigerian men. The tone that she uses is effective because it shows that she is trying to make a point and that she is trying to make people laugh. It also shows that she is not mad at people because she herself has been bought into the single story. “”…I was overwhelmed with shame. I realized that I had been so immured in the media coverage of Mexicans that they had become one thing in my mind, the abject immigrant. I had bought into the single story of Mexicans…” (Adichies). She tells the audience that she herself has bought into the idea of a single story. She explains that she looked at Mexicans as just illegal immigrants. She then states that she is extremely disappointed in herself for buying into the single story.
Chimamanda Adiche’s speech “The Dangers of a Single Story” is a strong and powerful piece, it uses strong examples, it is very thought provoking, and it has a humorous tone to it. She explains that everyone is guilty of the single story and everyone has bought into some type single story. She explains that some stereotypes are not always false but they are just unfinished. Therefore the audience should watch this speech, because it will help resolve the single story problem that one tries so hard not to buy
